The Year 4 Exhibition

The Human Body Exhibition has been a highlight on the Year 4 academic calendar for years. Big events in our Inquiry program allow for the assessment of a range of dispositions and skills. The combination of independent and group work allowed us to observe how well our Year 4 students managed their time, researched relevant information, represented this information in a meaningful way, collaborated with each other and presented their understandings to an audience.

The process involved two parts. The first part was student driven and involved each student choosing a body system (or part of a system) to research. They generated open and closed questions about the system to guide their research and then presented this information to a small group of peers and a teacher.  As part of this process, students also learned to use Microsoft Sway, an Office 365 presentation app.

The second part involved students joining a small group of peers, with expertise from different body systems. We brainstormed a range of major events/situations which would significantly impact human body systems and they chose an event to research (e.g. an illness, disastrous event, extreme diet or exercise). The challenge was for students to apply their body system knowledge to a specific event, collaborate effectively with their group and create a single presentation. Students then used put their presentation skills to work, creating informative and engaging posters, models and diagrams to display for their exhibition.

The result was quite frankly impressive. The Year 4s created an informative exhibition. They have exceeded our expectation to complete quality individual projects and to collaborate on producing group presentations of which were very informative and impressive.
