Senior Unit - 5/6

It has been a very busy fortnight in the Senior Unit, with many classroom and school based activities enjoyed by our students.

In Literacy, students have begun to look at ‘Hybrid Texts’, these are texts that incorporate multiple genres into one writing piece. Using the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as a mentor text, students have looked at how J.K. Rowling combined the layout of a Non-Fiction (Factual Text) with fictious plants and animals. The students are now creating a ‘Hybrid Animal’ such as a Blobtopus (a blob fish and an octopus combined) and writing about their new animal’s habitat, diet, appearance, and special attributes. The students will then create their own webpage where they will showcase their animal.

In Maths, students are coming to the end of our unit on multiplication. The students have been shown a number of different strategies throughout the unit, finding the one they find to be their ‘favourite’. The students will then move on to Division, where they will again be shown a variety of strategies to solve problems and also look at how multiplication and division are inverse operations and how this can help us work mathematically.

Over the past few weeks, students have been presenting their Geography Projects. Students were asked to choose a country located in the continents of Asia, Europe and North America, and research a number of key areas such as: Location, natural/man-made features, foods and also compare what it is like to be a child in Woodend vs in their chosen country.

The students have all done a fantastic job of presenting their findings, some even going above what was necessary by putting on their chef hats and creating a national dish, which was shared amongst their peers. Please see photos attached for some examples.
