Year 11 Biology Excursion to GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre)

On Thursday 20th July our Year 11 Biology students ventured to Melbourne to participate in their second laboratory session at GTAC.

This program focused on prenatal and predictive genetic testing where students worked in small groups with current PhD students to experience FISH (Fluorescence in situ hybridisation) technology to scan for error in chromosomal number and apply a Guthrie test to explore inheritance of PKU (phenylketonuria).

Students were excellent representatives for the school, they were able to apply their knowledge and explore career pathways in science research.

Many thanks to our Science Coordinator, Ms. Jessica Wright, for organising this opportunity.

9/10 Applied Science

Mr. Cheng has been showing his 9/10 Applied Science class some fun demonstrations to inspire them to ask questions about How and Why something might happen. In this pic he is bouncing a tennis ball on top of a basketball – the result was not what we expected!
