Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will begin Term Three by focusing on the domain of Number and Algebra where the students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of Fractions, Decimals, Money and Finance. As we move through the term, students will begin their Measurement and Geometry unit by exploring Shapes, Mass, Volume and Capacities. As we begin each unit of learning, students will start by orientating themselves with the vocabulary specific to each topic. This ensures our students have the language to explain and justify their thinking. Throughout each unit, we will continue to upskill our students by developing their strategies through the proficiencies of Problem Solving, Understanding, Reasoning and Fluency (SURF). The students will engage in a range of hands-on and rich learning tasks that challenge their thinking and will allow them to practice a range of strategies to solve the problem. They will continue practicing how to represent mathematical thinking using CPA strategies (concrete materials, pictorial representation and abstract strategies). We will continue to hold regular group/individual conferences with our students to set and track the progress of their SURF goals.

To support your child at home, encourage the following tasks:

  • Utilising fractions to measure ingredients when cooking Eg: ½ cup of flour.
  • Asking your child to make a fraction with their toys or snack Eg: Can you show me half of your sandwich.
  • Opportunities to see physical money being used if possible. Eg: groceries shopping, local market, counting spare coins.
  • Having conversations around invisible money or moving towards cashless interactions in our society. Eg: the use of credit cards and digital money.
  • Observing/checking the completion of your child’s weekly Home Learning task.

Key Vocabulary to support your child’s success in Mathematics:

  • Numerator/denominator (fractions)
  • Dollars/cents/value/change (money)
  • 2D shapes/3D objects/net (shape)
  • Grams/Kilograms (mass)
  • Mililitre/litre (volume and capacity)
