This week, we are learning to identify and describe the characteristics of cities in different locations in Australia


VOCABULARY

Characteristics -  It includes landforms, bodies of water, climate, soils, natural vegetation, and animal life. 

 

Landforms - They are the mountains, deserts, valleys and plains. 

Bodies of Water - Australia borders three of the world's oceans which are the Indian ocean, the Pacific ocean and the Southern ocean. 

Climate - Weather conditions around the different states of Australia. Australia has a wide range of daily temperatures, with summer temperatures ranging from 5.7°C in New South Wales to 30.8°C in Queensland, and to 8°C in Tasmania.

Soil - It is the loose surface material that covers the land. The types of soil around Australia

  1. Black earths, mainly heavy soils in eastern Australia
  2. Grey and brown soils, principally heavy soils in the semi-arid zone
  3. Podzolic soils in regions of higher rainfall under sclerophyll forests
  4. Red loams mainly derived from deeply weathered basalts

Natural Vegetation - It includes all plants, including but not limited to grasses, forbs, trees, shrubs, flowers, or vines that grow in the wild or under cultivation.

 

Animal Life -  A chance of spotting the native animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats, echidnas and even platypuses

With your child, discuss places they have been around the city of Wyndham, Melbourne city and beyond that have interesting landforms, bodies of water, animal life, climate coils and natural vegetation.
