Mathematics
CURRICULUM FOCUS
In Mathematics this week, we are learning to solve problems that involve values of money.
VOCABULARY
Total amount - the final amount when combining values of money, for example, when purchasing multiple items from a shop
Change given - the amount of money a person receives back when they purchase something using more money than the amount that the item(s) cost
Transaction - the act of buying or selling something
Addition - adding two or more numbers together to find out how much there is all together
Subtraction - taking one number away from another to find out how much is left
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Using the Kmart catalogue linked below, or a catalogue you may have at home, give your child an imaginary amount of $50 to spend.
Tell them that they need to choose 2 items they would like to buy, and they need to use addition to add the amounts together to work out the total amount it will cost. Then, ask them to use subtraction to work out how much change they would be given from their $50.
Your child could repeat this activity by choosing a different number of items to purchase, or even changing the amount of money they have to spend.
