Year 9/10 Visual Arts - Epoch
The theme for these installations arose from an invitation by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to participate in their postcard exhibition based on their Hobart Current theme of Epoch. The Epoch Postcard exhibition dates are 6 to 9 December 2023 at the Waterside Pavilion, to complement the Hobart Current: EPOCH exhibition. During the process of designing and making their postcards, students were asked to consider the word epoch and their vision of the future.
The Creative Director, Chris Twite, said of the theme selected for the Hobart Current Exhibition,
“Like never before, we have been given the opportunity to take stock of our lives, our beliefs and our actions as individuals, communities, and nations. As we step forth into 2023, one thing is certain, we know that it is a doorway and through it lies a new epoch. A new era that will define us for another generation. As we pass through towards this new future, there is room for nostalgia and cynicism for the past just as there is for hope and indignation for the future – but nothing will be the same. I want to encourage artists to look as much to the world as to themselves and their neighbours, to examine their stories and to spark conversations on who we have been and who we will become in this next great era.”
Out of the creative process making their postcards, the Year 9 students took the theme in many different directions. They have explored their concerns for the environment, pollution, climate change and food distribution systems. Some took a personal approach and examined their own journey as an artist, while others projected themselves far into an apocalyptic realm where the world as we know it has ended. Another student opted to make an immediate impact on her current world by planting a meadow to green up our balcony, whilst others are exploring artificial intelligence.
The students have demonstrated creativity and resourcefulness in the diversity of materials they chose to use. They have worked incredibly hard to produce these thought provoking sculptures and we hope you enjoy viewing them as much as they did making them. They are currently on display in the Art Room and will remain so for our Arts Evening on Friday 1st September.
