College Sport

Nikki Stuart

Welcome back to Sport for Term 3.

This term the College will field three Secondary and five Primary Basketball teams, a Year 7/8 and a Primary Hockey team, and a 9/10 Football team.

The Secondary swimming trials were held last week and the team commenced training this week in preparation for their two carnivals late in the term.

Good luck to everyone representing the College in sport this term.

Primary Basketball

JSSATIS Basketball is up and running, with the College represented by two teams from Year 3 and 4, a Year 5, a Year 6 and a combined Year 5/6 team.

In preparation for the Primary Basketball rosters, players have been training hard with Chargers Coaches Anthony Stewart and Mark Nash as part of the Chargers Community Program.

Uniforms were received last week with much excitement, and players hit the court last Thursday.  Opening matches at the UniGym were played in good spirits, with plenty of smiles and enthusiasm.

Thanks to students Antonette Conrades (Year 8) and Eva Schulze (Year 9) who will take the Year 3 and 4 students for training, and Year 9 students Esther Dance and Isabella Fenton who are coaching the Year 5 team throughout this term.

We hope the players enjoy the season, regardless of whether they are experienced or just trying basketball for the first time.

Secondary Basketball

The secondary teams also commenced their rosters last week.  Year 7 and 8 teams played on Monday and the Year 9 teams played on Wednesday. There was plenty of nerves, particularly from students new to the sport. It was pleasing to see so much encouragement from each other and team spirit. After some tips from the more experienced players, teams showed great improvement throughout their first matches.

The Year 7 team had a tough match against Mackillop in their first game, but Mackillop have now moved to Division 1, so that result won’t count. This week they had a much more competitive match against Friends’ coming out with a 16–12 victory.

The Year 8 team has enjoyed two strong wins so far 55–19 against St Mary’s Blue and 74-8 against Dominic, while Year 9 were defeated by Hilliard 53–6 in their opening game.

We are all looking forward to a fantastic season of basketball.

Secondary Swimming

Swimming has begun for a committed group of Year 7-10 students.  On Monday 31 July, they attended trials at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre with swimmers from St Mary’s College, St Virgil’s College and Guilford Young College to gather race times in 50m events. Last week, morning training commenced at Clarence Aquatic Centre. This continues on Tuesday mornings for seven weeks in preparation for the SSATIS Swimming Carnival on 1 September and SATIS Swimming Carnival on 13 September.

Year 9/10 Football

The Year 9/10 Football team has had a more relaxed introduction to their Term 3 roster.  The opening game last week against Collegiate was cancelled due to the rain, and the closure of Queenborough Oval.  Friends’ turned up to the match this week with only 7 players, so the team earned a forfeit win, but were still able to play a scratch match, by sharing players. This was a good opportunity for new players to acquire a feel for the game, and for the team to have a good hit out together without the competitive pressure.   Coach Chapman was happy with how the team went, but has asked the players for more tackling next week when they take on St Mary’s.

Players have been treated to specialist coaching from AFL Game Development Officer, and Mount Carmel alumni, Maggie Goldsmith over the past two weeks at training.  Both Maggie and the team have enjoyed these sessions and we hope to see Maggie cheering the team on at a game in the coming weeks.
