WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC

College Open Evening

We encourage families to attend a self-guided tour with some of our friendly staff and students on-site tonight from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. We will have some activities and information for families, which will be beneficial if you are wanting your child to enrol at SCSC in 2022. Please note: you are not required to contact the Administration Office to register but we do encourage families to click ‘attending’  SCSC Open Evening - Event so we have an idea on numbers. We look forward to seeing you tonight!

Whole School Athletics Carnival

Our 2021 Athletics Carnival will be held at Landy Field in South Geelong tomorrow (Tuesday 23 March).

Buses will be departing the College at 9:00am and returning at approximately 2:45pm (we will keep families updated with an ETA back to the college on the day). All students are to wear their College Active Uniform or an outfit of their house colour, we also ask students to wear sunscreen, bring their lunch, hat, drink and a mask for the bus.

We are looking forward to this whole school event, it will be a great opportunity for students to cheer on their peers and enjoy the day!

College Virtual Tour

We are so excited to present our college virtual tour to our community!

A big thank you to those students and staff who featured in the video, and also to Andy at Roseneath Creative for creating this for our college.

You can view our virtual tour on the below platforms:

Drug Education Session

A very informative session by our local Community Liaison Police Officer, Cathie Hastie. Information on this session can be found in Erin's Principal's Report.

Fire Drill

Well done to our students and staff on a successful fire drill last Tuesday morning! Our students conducted themselves very well and everything went smoothly on the day.

Barwon Schools Young Leaders Conference

The school captains participated in the Barwon Schools Young Leaders Conference 2021 on Friday 12 March. The captains shared with local primary school student leaders what it means to be a leader, and what they’ve learnt about being a leader. It was great to see so many young leaders working together to motivate, influence and learn from each other!

VCAL MC (Moral Courage) Hammer Award

Well done Shari S and Fletcher P in Year 12 on winning the Hammer Award for kindness and their ability to be their own person and stand up for others.

Year 9

Outdoor Ed

Miss Speed’s Year 9 Outdoor Education Class spent a lovely afternoon down at Cosy Corner learning and refining their kayaking skills. All students worked in pairs to navigate the strong winds and at times big swell. Our providers Southern Exposure commented on how respectful and energetic they students were.

Environmental Studies

Year 9 Environmental Studies students were engaged in removing some NSW wattle species that are infesting the Torquay coast. Students have partnered with Great Ocean Road Coast snd Parks Authority (GORCAPA) to complete these and other education tasks this year.

Year 9 & 10

Last week students across Year 9 and 10 began playing the ASX Sharemarket Game. In Year 9 FUSE, as part of their Humanities program, we teach students about investing and the Sharemarket. Students put into practice what they are learning by playing the Sharemarket Game where they receive a virtual $50,000 that they can invest over a 10 week period. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as they can get.

As a result of playing the game students:

  • develop their knowledge of the sharemarket.
  • learn how to research companies.
  • discover the importance of wise investment decisions.
  • gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events.
  • begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.
  • develop their numeracy skills through graph and trend analysis.

Currently Gus M sits at the top of our school’s ranking and is striving to stay in the top spot. Here are a couple of pictures of some students working together in their syndicate as they make important financial decisions and strive to be the best in the competition.

Year 10

Studio Art

Year 10 Studio Arts students have been exploring momento mori in their still life artworks. Using the set of evolution skull models from the Science department, they applied dry pastel to develop the forms and play with colour and shadows.

Art Literacy Program

As part of the Art Literacy program, Year 9 students have identified an art movement of interest and researched key ideas, artists and significant events that may have shaped this movement. This knowledge is now shared with all year levels who pass through the passageway linking the art classrooms.
