MATHS NORMS
Throughout the year we will endeavour to unpack the Positive Classroom Norms, also known as the Maths Norms. Last issue we shared what the norms were. Recently, we unpacked the Maths Norm: Maths is about creativity and making sense.
In both classes we unpacked what the norm meant to us. Below is what 4Z came up with.
At home:
Have a conversation around this norm and what it means to you. You may like to write down and record your own understanding and display it in your home.
Sessions
Throughout the term we have been exploring our understanding of Place Value, and how different representations can solidify our understanding up to five digits (10,000).
We continued this time with creating visual representation and renaming. Both of these were a way to assist students in understanding how numbers can be represented and impotance of being creative with our thinking and, the importance of it making sense.
Learning Intention:
To apply our knowledge of place value to read, write and create a visual representation numbers in numerical, word and physical form.
Evidence of our investigation
Name Values
Some examples of how students made their names with the MAB and then calculate their name's value.
Place Value Sculptures
Students created larger than life sculptures and recorded the value of their sculpture.
Both of these are 'works in progress' learning experiences we will continue in upcoming sessions.
Further Reading (from the Victorian Curriculum)
In addition to the norms, we also incorporate the learning proficiencies.
