Learning Improvements

This year our focus is on improving student outcomes in the area of Mathematics and Spelling.  The document about outlines how we will be working in these areas.  You will see our third improvement area is our Student Wellbeing Framework.  You can find out more information about SWELL in this newsletter.

Learning to Read

Parents play an integral role in the education of their children. Much of what children learn takes place through everyday experiences at home. Children’s literacy and numeracy development can be improved when parents encourage learning through everyday activities. Modelling literacy and numeracy behaviours helps children recognise the value of these skills. Please take a look at the fact sheets below for some information on how you can best support your child as they learn to be successful readers.

Digital Reading Libraries

GGSS students have access to some excellent digital reading resources.

Wushka is an Australian-developed, cloud-based digital reading program, accessible from all common browsers and devices. Within the Wushka libraries,  teachers of children in P-6 organise readers in the same way they would be organised within classrooms - by reading level or by phonics phases - and books are selected and assigned to students or reading groups. Teachers can provide students with their log-in details so that they can access these readers at home.

The Queensland State Schools Digital Library is available for students in years 1-6. There are 1000s of age appropriate books for children to read or share with you. Students can access this site using their MIS username which will be provided by your child's classroom teacher. The digital library can be accessed via the Sora application (available in the app store) or straight from the website.

STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics

At the end of each term the whole school engages in STEM activities.  This usually happens on the last Wednesday of each term.  This term we are focusing on problem solving activities with a maths focus.  Students work in teams, usually of mixed age groups.  They work with various staff during the day and use their growth mindsets.
