Tasmania Trip

Over the past few weeks’ groups of students from year eight and nine have been travelling to Tasmania. The groups, 1A/B and 2A/B have spent five days visiting Hobart, Port Arthur, and many landmarks in between.

On day one we travelled from Bairnsdale to Melbourne. After collecting our tickets for the Spirit of Tasmania we boarded and had time to explore before dinner and an early night (to avoid seasickness when crossing the bass strait).

Once we had departed the ship at Devonport the following day we stopped for breakfast. Later we (group 1A) visited the beautiful Cataract Gorge before returning to our hotel in Hobart. That night we went to a nearby cinema where we watched “Ride Like a Girl”, a movie by Rachel Griffiths about Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne cup.

On the third day we visited the Hasting Caves, dolomite structures created by water washing away land for hundreds of years. That day we had lunch at the Hastings Caves Hot Springs. On the way back to our hotel we stopped to see the sights from the top of Mount Nelson. That night we met up with the other group for ice-cream at “Van Deimond’s Land Ice Creamery”.

On the fourth day we travelled to the Russell and Horseshoe falls. Then we travelled towards Port Arthur, visiting the Blowhole, Devil’s Kitchen and Tasman Arch along the way. We also stopped at Richmond before quickly leaving our luggage in a caravan park and making our way to dinner. After dinner we experienced a ghost tour of Port Arthur and its history.

Finally, on the last day we stopped at the Tessellated Pavement. After, we had a daylight tour of the Port Arthur Historic sights to see what we had last night in the light. Almost immediately after we had a short boat ride to see the shore from the water before we made our way to the airport and travelled home.

While some of the days may have seemed short, we spent many hours on the bus to visit as many interesting places as possible.
