Home learning - Term 2 Week 5

Welcome to W5. We hope that all our Prep mums have had a great day today and that you were loved and spoilt.

Reminders for this week:

Friday - Our new code is 'Zz'. Your child is invited to be a zoo keeper and bring a cuddly animal to school with them.

Literacy

Reading

We will continue to work with the Write2Read cards this week, adding in the codes Xx, Yy and Zz. In learning the code Yy we will look at Y being used as a consonant at the beginning of a word and as the 2nd vowel sound of e and i at the end of a word. This week sees us having introduced all of the individual codes. As we have been introducing three sounds a week you may find it beneficial for your child to practice the codes daily.

We have looked at the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts, this week we are going to delve deeper into non-fiction texts.  We will be looking at how non-fiction texts use sub-headings to organise information and how to utilise the index to locate specific information.

The consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words and high frequency words will remain a focus on different days this week. Please do not feel your child needs to look at all 3 high frequency word groups. Begin at group 1 and when your child recognises all the words as well as they recognise their own name, move on to the next group. Instant recall of these words is of enormous benefit to their reading and writing.

Writing

Students will be learning about information reports (non-fiction text). They will be focusing on information report features such as heading (title), subheadings, factual sentences and labelled diagrams. Over the next few weeks students will write information reports on different community helpers. As this is a new skill for them, the content needs to be familiar or something they already have knowledge on so they are not learning a new skill and content at the same time. Therefore this week they will be writing an information report on teachers. Each day they will be adding to their information report to form a book at the end of the week.

Numeracy

We will revisit Addition this week and continue to reinforce the understanding that with Addition we are seeing how many there are 'altogether'. A progression for those who are ready, is to work on their automatic response which comes in different forms:

  • ways of making 10. For example 6+4, 3+7, 5+5
  • number facts. For example, 3+4=7, 6+2=8

We will also be exploring 2D shapes this week. There is a lot of vocabulary that goes with shape and includes words such as, straight, curved, sides, corners and then the names of the different shapes. Please encourage your child to use this terminology as it will become easier for them to remember it if they do.

If your child is wanting to clarify Maths terminology, the following is a great website. www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/

Tuesday is the Prep's 50th day of school. Assuming they have attended every single day they will have had 30 days of learning at school and 20 days at home. An example of their resilience and strength. As it is half way until our 100th day of school celebrations, we will be working with the fraction - one half.

Unit of Inquiry

This week we are continuing our unit of inquiry exploring the purpose of communities and the different roles people have within them.

We will begin the week addressing a current issue in our community to understand the importance and significance of belonging to a community. Throughout the week we will look at roles within a community and how they link to the places in a community. Students will be exposed to different jobs a person can have and understand how every role plays a part in the community. These jobs will include our community helpers that we can go to when we need help.

Optional activities

In the last column of the weekly learning plan you will find some optional activities. There is no expectation that they are completed. They are there to support the 'I'm bored' children.

Wellbeing

The Prep team have noticed how independent many of the students have become in using their technology and completing Seesaw tasks. This initially takes time, patience and sometimes the hardest of all letting go of control. However, not only does this allow you to eventually have more time to yourself and get through the huge list of other tasks on your agenda, you are really supporting your child's learning and Wellbeing. We teachers are loving seeing the students' sense of pride as they take a photo of their activity, talk to us in a video or voice recording and send us their work. This is also developing their IT skills and we will continue developing their learning in this area when back in the classroom.

Yogabean

Our school has had a great working relationship with Yogabean for several years now in order to promote self-care and mindfulness. Alex from Yogabean has kindly prepared a series of yoga and mindfulness videos for us to share with you free of charge, to support your child's home learning.

Yogabean mindfulness  - A very simple technique to do whenever you like, helping to get into the body and present moment

Yogabean Fitness  -   Quick 10 minute session to wake up the muscles and the mind
