Year 5 Science

In the Science "Forces" unit, the kids were asked to design an investigation, testing the theory that a stronger applied force, such as a push, a kick or a ramp being raised higher and higher, will result in an object travelling a longer distance. They needed to test their theory and then create a poster displaying their investigation results and conclusions.

Year 4 Writing

The following piece of writing was completed by a student in Year 4. They had been looking at  ‘Show don’t tell’. Show don’t tell is the 5th step in ‘The Seven Steps Of Writing’ (The writing framework we use at St Xavier’s to help guide the writing process.)

The task was to write a paragraph describing St Xavier’s without using the words St Xavier’s.

Work On Writing - Show Don’t Tell

We go to a place in the day when the sunshines. It has desks and chairs. There is different types of this but this is the greatest of them because few places have this much care, respect, inclusion and empathy. We love this place some may say it’s a dungeon, some may say this is heaven but to me it is home, home of knowledge, home to children, home to us, the students who will become the master one day. The lovely people who work here will be in my heart forever.
We are St Xavier’s… The greatest of all schools, my school. Go With God.

Debating

Some of our Year 6 students are competing in an inter-school debating competition. The competition is coordinated by Kerrie Priddus from the CSO office. The students participate in a live debate via a zoom hookup with another school. Students get approximately 2 weeks to prepare their arguments.

Our latest debating team recently went to Sacred Heart Boggabri. It was a hard fought debate with the students arguing that ‘Students Should Be Allowed To Choose Their Own Subjects’ The team took the line that “Schools are a place of learning and students have a right to decide what they are taught.” Boggabri put up a more convincing case to stay with the syllabus and let those more educated than children decide what they should learn.

Well done to the debating team who prepared for the debate in their lunchtimes.
