Over the course of the sudden lockdowns let’s remember how important it is to keep moving! Not only does it keep you active but also helps to clear your mind. When in lockdown, I make it a priority to walk every afternoon, although my routine was nowhere near exciting as Charli Ryan, our 2021 Cross Country Captain.  Daily she has a very busy schedule in relation to keeping active, but the lockdown certainly threw a spanner in the works. Let’s see how her routine changed and how she works around the snap lockdown.

Charli Ryan - Cross Country Captain

Snap lockdowns have had a huge impact on my exercise routines. I went from participating in spring training, athletics, bootcamp and after-school sport events to nothing. This was hard and I really struggled with not being able to participate in team sports.

I decided not to focus on the negatives and instead use the lockdown as an opportunity to find new interests in exercise and seek a new exercise routine. I figured I would find a way to have a daily routine that not only kept me healthy, but happy!

This started when I downloaded the 'Nike Run Club' app which really motivated me to get outside and enjoy a run! I followed online workouts in the morning to replicate bootcamp, getting a sweat in and setting me up on the right foot for online learning!

Family walks in the afternoon were always a great way to be outside and move around without even focusing on the 'exercise' aspect to it. However, it wasn't just my exercise routine that was impacted - but my nutrition too. Preparation became key, I couldn't just run to La Cucina and grab a pre-made lunch, so I prepped easy meals like buddha bowls, delicious salads, rice paper rolls, smoothie bowls - THE LOT! It’s true what they say: good food = good mood.

Although the lockdown held us all back, preventing us from partaking in our 'norms' and day-to-day activities and exercise, it's important we can adapt and look for the positives in the situation. For me it was seeking new health experiences; for you it could've been making the most of the last rays of sunlight by going on a nice walk. However, most importantly, it's important that we as a community stay happy and healthy. I hope this inspired or motivated you to explore new ways of moving and nourishing if another lockdown were to come - we never know, so it's great to be prepared.
