Year 3 Spotlight

Inquiry in Year 3
This term the Year 3 students’ inquiry topic is Geography. Students used atlases to explore and discover information about Australia and its states and territories. We have also discussed that the earth is made up of two hemispheres, Northern and Southern. We are specifically focusing on the Southern Hemisphere and the continents and countries that are situated there, such as Australia!
Students have created a map of the world dividing it into continents, and a map of Australia dividing it into states and territories. We have explored indigenous languages and investigated how the Australian continent was (and still is) divided into many Aboriginal Countries and Torres Strait Islander Places. We used two apps on the iPads to listen to some examples of the Taungurung and Wadawurrung people’s languages and we even practised pronouncing some of their words together. You may like to download these apps at home.
During online learning, students have designed and created their own superhero character based on themselves. They chose incredible superpowers that will make the world a better place. The students then had the opportunity to create a comic about their newly created superhero! This was a great way for students to use all of their knowledge and learnings from narrative writing, in a creative and exciting way.
Some of the superheroes include:
- Vaccine Victor who turns scary needles into strawberry flavoured pills so people who are scared of needles can get vaccinated.
- Pollutionator who zaps pollution away and replaces it with fresh air.
- Amazing Anna who makes yummy, delicious meals for people who don’t have money to buy food.
- Cilmete-Mah who has the superpower ‘Collision’, which allows him to suck up polluted air and turn it into oxygen by holding his hands together while shouting ‘COLLISION’!
- Teleporting Bart who can teleport anywhere and help people.
- Litter Layla who protects the world from litter. She can use her litter lasers to destroy litter in one blast!
- Ice Maker Jasper who shoots ice from his hands to stop the ice from melting and protect the planet.
Here are a number of Year 3 superheros!
