OOralla Centre Camp

Shanae Bull, Nathalia Landsborough and Kyiesha Landsborough attended the University of New England during week 3 to participate in the Oorala Aboriginal Centre Youth Leadership Program. The program is an introduction to university life, personal development and a range of life skills, as well as health, wellbeing and Aboriginal cultural awareness and pride.  The program provides opportunities for students to develop important values and skills such as leadership, culture and wellbeing.

On the first day, after we arrived at the Oorala Centre and met with the co-ordinators of the camp receiving an overview of what the camp would entail over the coming days and we also received a t-shirt and bag. Students from across the region including Moree, Inverell, Lightning Ridge, Kempsey attended this camp, so while we waited for the other participants to arrive we had morning tea and got to know the other students who had already arrived.  Once everybody had arrived we met our mentors and teachers before splitting into two groups to begin our sessions.

Our first sessions for the camp were ‘Getting to know you’, visiting the Dixson Library and  ‘How role models affect us’. We were lucky enough to participate in a sessions that were presented by mentors’ Dean Widders, Jefferson Taylor, Dennis Moran and Millie Jackson.  These sessions focused on forming connections within the camp, camp rules, camp values, developing an understanding of the diversity of Indigenous Australia and challenges that we may face identifying as an Aboriginal person. These activities were great and helped us meet the other girls and find out what we have in common with one another.

Our afternoon sessions included ‘An introduction to the Importance of Leadership’, exploring SportUNE and attending a session called ‘Sports Performance’ where we completed a fitness challenge and learnt about using mindful fitness to help us achieve our goals.

The second day we were awake at 5:30am for our first session of the day.  This was an exercise session  which involved mental and physical challenges requiring us to work together as a team under pressure.

After we had breakfast all the students met at the Oorala Lecture Theatre to participate in our first two sessions ‘Our actions have consequences’ and ‘Healthy Habits’.  These sessions focused on recognising the impact of actions on others and the ripple effect and developing an understanding of holistic health.

We then participated in a session called ‘Finding your voice’ which involved theatrical activities. Afterwards we explored the Natural History Museum. We attended the museum looking at all the animals and sculptures.  After we finished at the museum we participated in a ‘Weaving and Yarn Circle’. The purpose of this activity is to develop deeper connections to our culture.

On our last day at Oorala Centre camp we had to wake up at 5:30am to participate in the Nanyapura Boxing Program. After breakfast we packed up and cleaned our rooms before attending  a session which focused goal setting for study, health and work and also focused on growth mindset.

We also attended sessions during the camp which focused on possible career paths with UNE such as early childhhood education, sports science and careers in business and law.

Thank you to Miss Wendy Wilson, Miss Clea Townsend and Miss Eunice Blair and the Oorala Centre for making our time so enjoyable.

Ashford Central School Horse Sports Day

On Friday 1st November Brooke Grills and Courtney Reeves travelled all the way up to Ashford Showground to attend the Ashford Central School Horse Sports Day.

They had a wonderful day and represented the school with pride. They both showed outstanding sportsmanship and each made a few new friends.

Courtney attained the highest point score in the 16 years plus age group and Brooke would have been very close to achieving the same in the 13 years age group.

On Friday 22nd November the Glen Innes High School Horse Sports Day is being held at Glen Innes Showground. If interested, please see Mrs Lewis.

Kolora Homes Grandparents Day Celebrations

On the 30th of October 2019, Kindergarten went on an excursion to Kolora to be a part of their Grandparents Day Celebration. Kindergarten enjoyed the walk to Kolora and were lucky enough to see some friends and family along the way. Kolora had organised a variety of activities for Kindergarten to do alongside their residents. These included; seed planting, cookie making, mini golf, colouring in and beading. The students enjoyed all of the activities and were able to try some of their baking later in the day along with a sausage sizzle. A photo booth was set up for residents and students to use, with many opting for fancy dress! It was an incredible day enjoyed by all!

Great rehearsal sets the stage for a Spectacular show to come

With the first 2019 Schools Spectacular rehearsal yesterday declared a success, performers from across New England and North West are fully focused on the countdown to show week.

With the four Schools Spectacular shows locked in to Qudos Bank Arena at Sydney’s Olympic Park on Friday, 22 (11am, 7.30pm) and Saturday, 23 (1pm, 7.30pm) November, the showtime adrenalin is starting to build.

Schools Spectacular brings together a galaxy of talent includes 40 Featured Performers, an incredible 100-piece symphony orchestra, stage band, 2,700-voice choir, 2,300 amazing dancers, the D’Arts Ensemble disability program, the Aboriginal Dance Company, puppets and an indispensable behind-the-scenes team.

Yesterday, for the first time in the show’s 36-year history dozens of regional and rural schools* took advantage of the opportunity to link in with more than a thousand performers who flocked to Qudos Bank Arena for the first massed dance rehearsal. (*A list of the regional schools appears at the end of the release.)

Together the online performers and the dancers on the arena stage went through the paces of the iconic finale widely recognised as the jewel in the crown of the Schools Spectacular.

Co-Executive Producer, Rosemary Davis was delighted by  how well the rehearsal came together.

“It was the best ever,” Ms Davis said.

“Everyone was just amazing and there was an exciting energy with every performance.

“The success of the rehearsal is a great start and a huge motivation as the pace of practise gathers momentum for schools and ensembles."

“We’re very excited how the show is coming together.”

Ms Davis said the theme of this year’s Schools Spectacular is STARS.

She said New England and North West stars will include:

Featured Artist

  • Oxley High – Hannah Burton

Featured Dancer

  • Guyra Central – Savannah Roberts

and performers and crew from:

  • Armidale Secondary College (AD, CC, CD)

  • Inverell High (CD, D)
  • Oxley High (CC)
  • Quirindi High (SC)
  • Tamworth High (CC)
  • Tamworth South Public (CC)

Each star will contribute to a Schools Spectacular that in the true spirit of variety, the fast-paced show will transition through a colourful choreographed kaleidoscope of music from pop and hip hop to the classics, from a crescendo of massed voices to stunning solos, and a full spectrum of dance styles.

Tickets for the show are still available through Ticketek, but book soon to avoid disappointment.
