Year 2 Ceres Excursion

Year 2 Indigenous History & Geography Unit

On Friday the 23rd of November, the Year 2's went on an excursion to CERES as part of our Indigenous History and Geography unit. Students participated in four workshops:

  • Aboriginal Dreaming Stories
  • Bush Tucker
  • Ochre Painting
  • Merri Creek History Walk

During the Aboriginal Stories workshop, we were able to act out the Dreaming story 'Tiddalick The Frog'. We wore costumes and our teachers had to pretend to be Tiddalick! We learnt that Indigenous Australians wore possum skins and decorated the inside of the skins with stories of their own lives.

The Bush Tucker tour took us through the grounds of CERES where we found and tasted some Indigenous plants such as Salt Bush, Native Spinach and identified plants like Lilly Pilly and Murnong.

By Valentina & Jaimi, Year 2

We learnt how to use ochre, which is a special stone used to make Indigenous paint. We painted on our arms and our guide painted our faces into Emu's and Wedge Tailed Eagles.

The Merri Creek History walk was fun. We learnt that only male elders can play the didgeridoo in front of a tribe. We got to hold a boomerang, a digging stick and other tools.

We had a great time at Ceres and learnt a lot. Even in the rain, it was awesome!

What does Country Mean to Aboriginal people?

Aboriginal's love their land because their relationship can never break. They love what's inside the land, the animals and the food supplies that the land offers them.

The land means their family bond to their family and the bond to their family comes from the land. The land gives them hope and confidence that the Aboriginals can take their land back. The Dreaming stories were told within the land. The land owns the Aboriginal people and the Aboriginal's own the land. The land helped the Aboriginal's survive. The land means everything to them.
