CAREERS

Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning

Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning in non-high risk settings can now recommence. The Department of Health has recommended that SWL and Work Experience placements in high risk* settings (i.e. healthcare, aged care, meat works etc) will be deferred until further notice.

Students are required to follow indoor and outdoor face mask requirements of the workplace they are attending.  Students must be included in the density limits for the workplace and comply with any restrictions applicable to that workplace as well as the COVIDSafe Plan in place.

This week in Careers

Over the past three weeks we have held Subject Selection interviews with Years 8, 9 and 10 students to help guide students through the Course Selection process for 2022. These interviews were a huge success, despite conducting half of them via phone conference with students due to the recent lockdown.

Our Year 12 students are once again in our focus with VTAC, which opened on Monday 2 August.

Students have been emailed a Tertiary Information Session video, which explains how to apply for University and TAFE courses through VTAC.

Over the coming weeks, students will be invited to attend lunchtime sessions on setting up a VTAC account and to book a further careers appointment to explore and check their course selections.

University and TAFE

OPEN DAYS

Some advertised University, TAFE and private providers have changed their face-to-face expos, that were scheduled through July and August, to Online/Virtual Open Days.

If you are interested in attending Open Day sessions, it is important that you check session dates, times and details on the institution websites.  Due to venue density limits you must register to attend face-to-face sessions.

A full list of Open Days are published on the VTAC website;

OR can be found in the EVENTS section of the Lilydale High Careers website;

VTAC Application Webinars

The TIS website is currently providing a series of online webinars (both live and recorded sessions) to help students navigate their way to higher education. A recent webinar was the VTAC Application webinar.

VTAC has a series of events running through August which will cover applying, SEAS, scholarships and understanding the ATAR: https://vtac.edu.au/events

VTAC has developed a Year 12 student guide to assist with their course application process:

Careers in Criminology

Many students consider a career in the legal industry yet only know of a lawyer or judge. Many have heard of, but do not know, what a criminologist does.

The Good Careers Guide states that Criminologists examine the systems by which people accused of crimes are brought to justice, attempt to explain the reasons for criminal behaviour and suggest ways crime might be reduced.

Criminologists may perform the following tasks:

  • study the ways certain criminal justice agencies operate including the law courts, police services, prisons and community-based correction centres
  • provide information about crime and the ways in which people are processed by the criminal justice system
  • compile crime statistics and develop ways in which crime solving resources can be best used

Criminologists may specialise in organisational research, victimology, corporate crime, adult corrections and/or juvenile justice. They may work in the legal field, which tries to make sure that laws keep up with changes in society. They may also work in the social/psychological fields, which study the effects of the criminal justice system or the factors which contribute to offending behaviour by individuals.

So, what type of person becomes a criminologist?

  • Someone who has analytical ability
  • Someone with personal integrity
  • Someone interested in welfare and human behaviour
  • Someone interested in working with disadvantaged groups

Visit the Australian Institute of Criminology to find out more.
