ORBIS

LNPS Professional Learning Journey 2021

Orbis

As part of our Site Improvement Plan goals we have planned an ambitious strategy to further build on staff capacity through engaging in extremely high quality professional learning through Orbis.

Orbis delivers the very best professional learning to South Australian teachers and leaders. Using contemporary research and best practice, they offer flexible, differentiated programs that work with the profession, for the profession. Orbis is an approach to professional learning that is based on the experiences of the world’s best education systems who engage leaders and teachers in learning that is purposeful, collaborative, and empowering.

Over Semester One we have had the two cohorts of teachers undertake intensive learning at Orbis.

Early Years teachers have graduated Numeracy R-2. Through this  intensive  course teachers have engaged in professional learning where they developed their pedagogical knowledge in teaching of Mathematics and Numeracy.

Through this  course teachers and leaders have:

  • explored the role of multiple representations and intentional sequencing in developing conceptual understanding in Mathematics
  • engaged with the research to develop strategies that support students with mathematics anxiety
  • developed domain-specific mathematical vocabulary to use with students
  • practised strategies to support students to approach worded mathematical problems
  • been exposed to a range of assessment instruments to assess mathematical fluency, problem solving, understanding and reasoning
  • reflected on how to build critical and creative thinking across the strands in mathematics.

Fisher teachers have graduated  Literacy 3-6. Through this  course teachers and leaders have:

  • used specific strategies to engage learners in dialogic talk, incorporating learning area vocabulary to improve reading and writing outcomes
  • effectively applied evidence informed approaches to teaching reading using a range of texts, including multimodal texts, to support literacy teaching across the curriculum
  • gained deeper understanding of the interrelated components of writing, while exploring the teaching and learning cycle to plan and scaffold the reading and writing of complex texts
  • expanded  knowledge of language to develop the teaching and assessment of reading and writing
  • effectively interpreted and used assessment data to inform teaching practice, including incorporating differentiated strategies to address the specific learning needs of all learners.

Both courses required teachers planning and implementing an applied learning project. All our teachers presented learning from their projects to an extremely high standard.

Next semester Torrens teachers will be undertaking Mathematics 3-5.

Congratulations to all our teachers who participated and graduated this semester.  The learning projects presented were  a celebration of each individual's story, professional learning implementation, and a time to share the learning successes, challenges, and reflective findings.

The teachers at LNPS continue to  uphold and live our school beliefs through collective efforts and collaboration. Each individual is recognised for their valuable contribution to our school community, and are sincerely appreciated for their ongoing input in going "above and beyond" for our students and each other.

Thank You!
