Room 17

This term Room 17’s inquiry focus was on The Solar System. Students researched different elements of the eight planets and their surroundings. Some of the main findings included the largest, the coldest, the planet that spins on its side, how many moons each planet has, information about black holes, the milky way and what stars are made of. Everyone was fascinated as to why Pluto was no longer considered a main planet due to its size and this lead to the study of dwarf planets.

The students have vastly improved their research skills by reading library books and using the iPads to find details about individual planets. From here room 17 designed their own planet, they could decide such features as the name, the colours, the terrain, the number of moons and the level of gravity. Recently we have been reviewing our Space knowledge with quizzes and peer questions in the campfire.

In our Art lessons each student created their own version of the solar system using water paints, crayons, oil pastels and glitter.  They also created their own UFO with an alien on board.

In mathematics room 17 have been learning about money through financial maths as well as moving into multiplicative thinking. The students have shown huge growth in this area of learning, and they have been able to share their new skills and strategies with their peers including following number patterns, grouping, arrays and multiplicative problems. It has been fantastic to see such strong teamwork during these lessons.

As a part of PE, we have been learning how to play Volleyball on Monday afternoons with our coach Emma and the learners from room 6. During our final session this week the sun finally came out and we were sorted into teams and played using a net. The students presented sportsmanship whilst displaying their new talents.
