Another term of Marist sport has come to an end and didn’t we finish with a bang. Last Saturday saw Marist host the basketball and tennis, the whole AIC rugby league round, featuring all six schools, and a club swimming meet. It was a really positive and collegial atmosphere around the campus as we played fixtures in all three sports against St Patricks College.
Marist was successful in all three first teams, the most exciting of which was the basketball where we came back from six points down with less than two minutes on the clock to force overtime, no small part to College Captain Ethen Tsiamalili who shot two clutch free throws under pressure. The boys went on with the job from there and won comfortably in overtime. If anyone thinks supporters do not play their part, St Pats beat us quite easily in the trial match at Shorncliffe, so thank you to the boys who cheered on the team and played your part in what was a very exciting match of basketball. It was a fitting conclusion for the season, and a just reward for the commitment, sportsmanship and perseverance of this team. Thank you to Mr John Lambourne (Co-ordinator), Ms Sarah Palmer (Junior Co-ordinator), Mr James Lidstone (1st V Coach) and all the coaches and support staff who have worked tirelessly this season to support the boys.
Our 1st IV tennis team were looking to claim their own piece of history on Saturday with a premiership and they held up their end of the bargain with a comfortable 6-2 victory against St Pats but unfortunately, Iona held off St Peters to win the outright premiership, meaning our boys finished a very commendable second, which is a terrific result for our tennis program. Thank you to Mr Andrew Ward (Coordinator and Head Coach), Mr Callum Rees (Coach) and all the staff who were involved in the tennis program. It was a hugely successful year all round in tennis and something everyone should be very proud of, with room to grow further in 2023.
Rugby league was the winner on Saturday as Marist hosted Villanova v Padua, St Laurence's v St Edmunds and Marist v St Pats. The boys enjoyed running out on a pristine McMahon Oval on a glorious, sunny day, and it was reflected in the results, culminating in the 1st XIII winning comfortably. Thank you to Mr Ryan Apps (Coordinator), 1sts coaches Mr Trevor Bailey and Mr Wayne Treleaven, and all the staff and coaches who give up their time to mentor our boys each week. Our rugby league program continues to develop year after year, in no small part down to the commitment of the staff and the community involved.
With the change over of sports seasons happening now for some sports we just need to ensure that sports still competing have priority. At this point in time that is our track and field team are working hard in pursuit of eight in a row. We need every boy in the track and field team focused on their event and their preparation. Where a clash occurs with a summer sport, track and field must take priority. Track and field boys should not be attending pre-season training until after the AIC championships in Week 1 of Term 4. Coaches and Coordinators are aware and will not adversely affect boys selection opportunities due to track and field commitments. Please contact me at lennond@marash.qld.edu.au if you have any concerns or questions.
A new competition for E-Sports has been developed by the AIC. The competition is for Year 7-9 boys, with the college entering two teams of five (10 boys in total). It will be held on Saturday 22 October from 8:30am-1:00pm at Villanova. The game being used is Minecraft Education Edition. As this is the inaugural year boys will be chosen on a first-in-first-served basis, if there are more than 10 expressions of interest priority will be given to Year 9s. We will keep a waitlist of boys as shadows in case of boys withdraw. Signup will be through the normal sport sign-up process opening at 8:00am Thursday 15 September.
Mr Derek Lennon (Co-ordinator)

Mr Ryan Apps - Coordinator
What a wonderful round of Rugby League last Saturday. Again our teams showed their never give up Marist attitude, culture and spirit.
McMahon Oval looked outstanding and all of our teams put on marvellous performances for their families, supporters and spectators to observe. A big thank-you to our grounds staff for making Marist fields the best in the AIC. I and the school could not be happier with every aspect we saw last Saturday. The it was a glorious day and more proof that God wants us to play Rugby League at MCA.
What a fantastic Rugby League season for the school and all of our Marist teams, we should be very proud of their achievements both on and off the field. We continue to develop all grades from year 5 to the 1st XIII, and the results are proving that Marist are again becoming a real force in the Rugby League arena.
This year we have taken our Rugby League Program to new levels, not just the coaching and development but areas that show how this great game can be embraced by our cohort. Having Rugby League legends like Mr John Ribot, Mr Allan Langer and Mr Kevin Walters at training sessions and discussing their experiences in the game gave our teams an amazing insight into Rugby League from every aspect.
My thanks to all the coaching and support staff, players, parents, families and supporters for a tremendous 2022 Rugby League season and look forward to an even bigger 2023.
1st XIII - Connor Lyons - 1st XIII Captain
After a week off to rest and recover, the 1st XIII prepared for the last game of the season on home turf, which for many, would be the last time they don the blue and gold. Despite the premiership being out of reach, the boys still had everything to play for, with the emotions translating directly into the first five minutes with heavy contact from prop forwards Jimmy Boland and Jack Billing proving hard to contain. Both teams battered in the middle of the field, battling for field position, which Marist eventually found, taken advantage of by Rory Baker with his signature scoot out of dummy half for a try. St Pats struck back soon after, catching Marist out on the left edge and finding a bit of room to put their centre through. Powerhouses Toby Anderson and Tasman Barry then stepped up, carrying the ball tough up the guts and creating front football for the left edge of Jasper Barry and Leon Karena to capitalise on. More points came soon after through hooker Rory Baker, who dived at the ankles of an unsuspecting St Pats forward to notch up his 9th try of the season and round out the half, 10 – 4. The boys lost no momentum during the halftime break, coming out with a 50-metre try to Jack Andrews setting the standard for the rest of the game. Storming runs from James O’Connor and Reggie McMillian forced their way down the field, wearing down Pat's defence for Jack Billing to crash over. Pats hit back with a late try to narrow the gap but were no match for Tom Young’s footy instincts, who spotted space on the left side, setting up a lovely try for Daniel Witt in the last minute of the match to cap off a well-fought game, 22-10 in Ashgrove's favour.

Coach’s Report – James Lidstone
The 1st V concluded their season on Saturday with a home game v St Pat’s. Saying farewell to 8 of our players we wanted to make sure that we put in a good team performance against the 2nd placed St Pat’s squad.
We started the game off in blistering fashion with St Pat’s man defence unable to stop our well-executed offences. With some unselfish passing, strong finishing and slick shooting we jumped out to an early lead. We knew St Pat’s would continue to grind away and that they did. Our full-court pressure wasn’t producing the stops we wanted so we settled into an arm wrestle with them. The game was extremely close the whole way with no more than 6 or 7 points separating the teams.
St Pat’s started to pull away towards the end of 3rd and start of the 4th and it was looking like a small lapse in concentration was going to cost us another chance at victory. Some clutch 3s from Brent Humphreys and Matt Gibson and the tireless work of the Marist big men kept us close. With just over a minute to go and facing a 6-point deficit, it didn’t look like our last game was going to be one to remember. A massive 3 from Matt Gibson cut the margin to 3 with 40 seconds to play. This got the crowd pumping and it was going to come to the next defensive stand. The boys stood tall and got the important stop with 20 seconds to go, three-point attempts from Gibson, Humphreys and Declan Tunny all rimmed out before Ethen Tsiamalili got his hands on an offensive rebound, he shot the ball in from the keyway and got fouled to put us down by a point. Ethen kept his composure and drained the all-important free throw. We forced overtime and with the crowd going berserk and the momentum with us we got out to an early 8-point lead and didn’t look back. The boys hung together, stay composed and walked away with a very deserved win to end the season.
Captain’s Report – Brent Humphreys
The final round of AIC Basketball saw the Marist 1st V take on a strong St Patrick’s College side at home. Determined to save the season and show our true capabilities, the boys went all in, with the senior boys playing their last-ever game for the College. After suffering a narrow loss to Pat's in the preseason, Marist attacked hard, pushing an early lead. However, Pat’s fought back, bringing the game back to neck and neck. With the game swaying sides over and over, the hive were on their toes keeping the energy high, and it was set to go down to the final point. Down three, with seconds left on the clock, Ethen Tsiamalili showed his dominance in the key, scoring an and-1 and sinking the free throw, to bring the game to a tie at the buzzer. Going into overtime, the boys gathered themselves and proved they can push the extra mile, outpacing the opposition to seal the game 60-54.
BBI U15 Division 2 Champions
The Marist College Ashgrove Year 8 basketball boys came together to represent the College as the West City Titans U15 Div2 team. The team competed strongly all through the season and enjoyed the opportunity to consistently play with their mates and develop not only their individual skills, but more importantly the teamwork necessary to win in tight games. After one draw during the season the boys went through undefeated, however, had to fight hard at the end of the season. With three out of the final four games decided by 3 points or less, the boys showed tremendous character, defensive intensity and determination to win the Grand Final in an epic battle by only 3 points.
Congratulations to the team consisting of a number of Year 8A/B players, including:
Matt Pegg, Harry Cook, Harry Prole, Cooper Chugg, Aiden Lau, Josh Bellett, James Gissing, Nick Weaver, Leon Nauer, Oliver Pelegrina, Lachlan Pawsey, Makenzie Bowen.

Match Reports
What’s coming up at the courts and a wrap-up of the season.
Our last match of the season. I would like to start by thanking all boys from our Year 5 to Opens team for a fantastic season. From all the coaches here at Marist it has been our pleasure to see the rewards that we have worked for from early in Term 2 in preparing for this season.
We finished the season in the five accredited premierships winning undefeated with Year 7 sharing and Year 9 outright. We also came second in Year 10 and Year 8 and outright second in our First team only losing to the winners Iona College. Our Years 5A, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, and 9B going undefeated this year and would have won premierships if offered.
During the season we won 27 matches 8-0 and 16 matches 7-1, which tells me the boys have got a taste for winning.
From 115 matches played this season, Marist managed to win a whopping 91 matches, tied one match with 23 losses. The majority of those losses were from the ATC team playing in our fourth and Fifth divisions and our improving year 6a team who had some close matches but just could not bring home the results. We are proud of you boys all the same as you are part of something greater and that the whole school is improving in our great sport.
All boys should hold their heads high as this is the best season tennis has had in over a decade. We therefore would have won 8 premierships and came second in 4 others. From 17 teams that is fantastic for us as a club as we move forward in our pursuit to dislodge St Peters from the top of the hill.
We could sit back and admire this season for a while but I know myself and my team are hungry for further success and we will be doing all we can to prepare our teams for next year as we pursue to win as many premierships as we can.
Next year starts in Term 4 with our Squad program where all of this success we had this year began. Next term is looking to be the busiest term that I have had here at Marist and it is great to see the next generation of players developing right before our eyes.
All our players are taught from an early age what we would like from them to be a part of our first and second teams as we build players who can play both singles and doubles.
Our concentration on detail in what makes a tennis player I believe makes us stand out from other tennis coaching businesses.
Here at Marist, we value every student who trains in our squads and we will leave no stone unturned to train you to become our next stars.
With our squad program, all members will have Friday afternoon fixtures free with their enrolment.
Next term is almost full with only a couple of positions left so if you were wanting your child to be a part of the program here at Marist please do not leave it, as once we are full we will not be able to take any more students until 2023. Any information on our squads please email us at: MCATennis@marash.qld.edu.au

Will Banner – Triathlon
Last week, Will represented Queensland in the School Sport Australia National Triathlon Championships in Hervey Bay after qualifying in February this year.
Will placed 10th in Australia in the junior male individual event which was a 300m swim, 10km cycle and 2km run. Will also competed in the junior mixed team relay event (2 boys, 2 girls each completing a 200m swim, 5km cycle and 1.5km run), with his Queensland team placing 3rd.
A huge achievement after months of tough training, especially through winter. Queensland once again took out the overall winning team in the competition for the 16th year in a row!
