Sustainabilty & Gardening News

Hi everyone!

Gardening Fun

Thanks to our fabulous Sustainability leaders and other Year 5/6 helpers, we have had terrific working bees in the garden the last two weeks.  Only a few weeks ago, we emptied a bag of “worm eggs” into our newly installed compost buckets, and they have now transformed into fat worms, turning our lunch scraps into nutritious soil to grow our veggies. We turned all the soil and scraps, to help them break down further and learned about why we add shredded paper to the bins. It  It decays quickly and adds organic matter (not to mention serving as a nice "dessert" for our worms).

We found several bright yellow spotted ladybirds on our silverbeet and wondered whether they eat our plants or help them. Miss Belinda sent a photo to an Entomologist (someone who studies insects) and they wrote back to us saying “They are friendly. The yellow ladybirds don’t eat other bugs, but they feed on fungi that attack plants, like powdery mildew, so they can help with plant diseases.”

We harvested so much bok choy, silverbeet, calendula and chives today - we bet there will be some yummy stir fries for dinner tonight!

We would love to see any photos of our produce taken home being included in your dinner!  If you take a photo, please send to bnechwatal@tcs.catholic.edu.au.

Things we need!

Wooden spoons - to make decorative plant labels for our vegetable gardens.

We still need more paper bags to take our veggies home in. Please leave at the office, labelled “Miss Belinda”.

Thank you!

Nude Food

This week’s winner is ¾ B O’c, with 18 rubbish free lunches. Well done!

Some yummy ideas - a sandwich/wrap/roll, pasta with vegetables, soup, frittata or sushi, a fruit or vegetable snack, such as whole fruit, cut up veggie sticks, fruit or savoury kebab or a small salad.

There is a great booklet of ideas here
