STAGE ONE NEWS

It is the second week of Term 4; the weather is slowly starting to warm, and Stage 1 have been diving in and learning all sorts of new things!  We are so excited to share what we have done, and what we will do, this term.

STAGE ONE TECHNOLOGY

This Term Stage One have been lucky enough to be increasing their use of technology.

Mrs Dunham has introduced digital whiteboards, called Jam Boards to Stage One which allows students to design their own content on a digital platform that can be shared.  Stage One have learnt a new way to share their work in the classroom, by being able to show their laptop screen on the main smart board.

Year Two students have started to learn to type using a program called typing.com.  This will help them to gain confidence in their typing skills.  They will learn where the keys are so they can concentrate on what to type, not where the letters are.  These skills will be great to use in later years.

Each Year 2 student has been given access to an individual account at typing.com. and they can use these accounts at home if they would like to.

DRAMA

Performers have used both puppetry and masks for thousands of years!  Some historians even believe they predate actors in theatre.  Last week, the Possums met Posy Possum and the Magpies met Maggie Magpie – our class puppets.  Stage 1 had so much fun talking with these new class friends and had so many questions to ask them!

In the Possum classroom students were asked to bring their own puppets or toys to do some acting of their own.  The Possums and the Magpies are really enjoying creating their own characters, trying out different voices, and acting using their toys and puppets.

In the Magpie classroom we are going to make a variety of puppets and masks and experiment with different ways to move our puppets.  Our first activity is building our own bird puppets for our play ‘Peace and Quiet’ by Sue Murray.  The birds in our play are LOUD!  We are going to either a create a kookaburra, a duck, a seagull – or maybe a special new bird of their own creation.

MATHPIES

In Maths we have been doing a variety of activities that provide opportunities to further develop students understanding of place value.  We have been locating, sequencing, and comparing numbers on a number line.

This week students sat facing 2 long ropes which were parallel to each other and represented the hour hand and minute hand.  We then turned the ropes into a circle, so the numbers represented the face of a clock.

To the parents and students of Martin’s Gully Public School

We are excited to let you know that we are taking part in National Bandanna Day this year. Held on the Friday 28th of October, Bandanna Day is the flagship fundraising and awareness campaign for Canteen.

Canteen provides free and tailored support to young people aged 12-25 who are impacted by cancer. Whether they are dealing with their own diagnosis, a close family member’s cancer or the death of a loved one, Canteen provides support such as counselling, peer support events and youth friendly resources.

Young people impacted by cancer are up to six times more likely to face mental health issues like anxiety or depression than their peers. After just six months of support from Canteen, almost two-thirds of young people report improvements in their mental health and overall wellbeing. Canteen also provides services for parents dealing with cancer in their family, because our research shows that when parents are supported through cancer, their children cope much better as well.

This Bandanna Day, we are supporting young people impacted by cancer by selling bandannas and fundraising for Canteen. Bandanas can be purchased at school on Friday 28th October, and cost $5 each. Please bring the correct amount of money.

We will also hold an out of uniform day and ask families to donate a gold coin.

Thank you for helping Martin’s Gully make a difference to the lives of young Aussies!
