What's Happening

Room 8 Assembly

In HASS this term Room 8 have studied historical events and celebrations around the world and the similarities they have in comparison to Australia. The students were particularly interested in the USA, so decided on America as a focal point for our Assembly item. Our ‘Director’ on the day, spent a few years living in the States, so was an additional wealth of knowledge, along with a cheerleader and Lady Liberty, having spent some time there or in neighbouring countries. This excited all students and gave them additional motivation and interest, being student-lead.

We had weekly, whole-class lessons where we learned so many interesting historical and cultural facts of significance, and likened many parts to what we know and experience in Australia. We learned SOOO much more than what we could showcase on the day.

The students brainstormed what they felt were some of the most interesting areas and then decided on their item. From there they did additional research on their particular part, and as a group, many discussions were held with input from all. There were volunteers for supplying props and positive feedback was given on ‘what works well and even better if’, in regards to individual, pair, and group items.

The ‘Thinking Hats’ strategy was a useful tool to reflect on learning (Edward DeBono, please look it up if you are unfamiliar). Students are required to think with a particular ‘hat’ on, as opposed to just giving their personal opinion. Sometimes there was the odd hiccup along the way, but we learned patience, resilience, tolerance, compromise and most of all kindness as a result. They learned far more than the HASS knowledge alone. I am so proud of my students who came up with their own ideas and practised their parts with minimal input from myself (except maybe from a stuffed horse from verge collection!)

Well done Room 8, we’re a great team. Next up is continuing our learning about The First Fleet in Term 4. Have a wonderful term break everyone.

Chaplain's Chat - Issue 8

This term we challenge you to crunch the rainbow for Crunch&Sip® by making a rainbow in your classroom. Eating different coloured fruits and vegetables provides lots of different vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Which is why crunching on a rainbow will help kids get the right balance of nutrients they need for a healthy body.
