Yoga in the ELC
This week, the children were fortunate to have a yoga session with Laura (Educator and Yoga instructor). They started in a circle with a greeting of ‘namaste’ then learnt part of the Sun Dance (sun salutation), poses such as Ragdoll, Cobra and Grasshopper and they visualised a story about a boy named Max.
Laura tells us that Yoga is very beneficial for keeping the body happy and healthy while improving flexibility, strength and coordination. The children also learnt breathing techniques that help quieten the mind which helps reduce anxiety, fears and stressful situations.

Bastille Day Celebrations
Last week, the Junior School celebrated the well-known French holiday... Bastille Day.
Everyone wore a French accessory and enjoyed the activities that were held. During recess and lunch there was French face-painting, hair braiding and bracelet making. Some Year 6 students, teachers and students visiting from France helped to paint on French flags, moustaches and love hearts. We also had a lot of laughs with the French photo booth. We dressed up in moustaches, berets, beards and wigs.
Another enjoyable activity was the monument building competition. Students from Years 3 - 6 gathered in groups of 2s and 3s to build a French monument or attraction out of Popsicle sticks and blue tack. This was a very enjoyable but also challenging activity. At the end, 9 prizes were given out to the groups with the best monuments.
Throughout the day, there were delicious crepes for sale. So many yummy fillings to choose from included: dark chocolate, salted caramel, jam, honey and lemon and sugar.
Bastille Day was a day filled with fun and laughter and will definitely be a highlight in the calendar for 2016.

Maths in Industry and Technology (MIT) Challenge
During the holidays, VCE students Sam Cooke, Matthias Haslauer, Roger Chooi, Elizabeth Hu, Abbey McCorquodale, Peter Yu, James Churilov and myself competed in the MIT Challenge at The University of Melbourne. This is a biannual event held as part of their Maths Fair Day.
Armed with both knowledge from the classroom and the priming lectures beforehand, fifty teams of four competed in a lateral thinking competition that simulated a real world problem.
Our brief was to allocate a budget of $10M in the most cost efficient way to simultaneously maximise the eradication of invasive species A, B and C. We were provided with a document consisting of graphs and costs of eradicating each species, and utilised the equation, f(x) = 1- p × e-Lx. Teams spent two and a half hours tackling problems that provided various restrictions and required the manipulation of figures. We wrote up our findings in a report that supported our most logical solutions. The key to success was to not only be as mathematically correct as possible, but also communicate succinctly our results for the non-expert.
As someone who is interested in pursuing a stemmed career post university, this experience proved to be very beneficial. It truly reinforced the connection between the fundamentals of mathematics taught at Kilvington and the everyday real world issues facing the future of Australia and the world.
