Year 9 Advance Program
Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) Week
Year 9 ADVANCE students participated in the Kids Teaching Kids (KTK) Week in September as part of their community service for the Dukes Award. KTK Week proudly sponsored by Target is a free, national, inquiry based, peer teaching program that uses the environment for learning. The event was hosted in September by Emma Canning at St Peter’s Catholic primary school, Epping. Our students presented engaging workshops on biodiversity, waste and water and enjoyed learning about sustainability from their peers. It was a great day – sincere thanks to Ms Mana Mohan for her support and encouragement at the event. Kids Teaching Kids provides an excellent opportunity for young people to share their passion for caring for the planet whilst having “fun”!
Strathbogie – Mt Stirling Nordic Skiing Experience
In August, the Year 9 Advance class experienced Nordic skiing for the first time at Mt Stirling. It provided a chance for all of us to ‘get out of our comfort zone’ and be ‘frozen’. The five E’s encapsulate the cross country skiing experience – exhilarating, exasperating, exhausting, somewhat enjoyable and extremely breathtaking! A special thank you to Mr Micallef for his support and supreme driving skills and to Melbourne University student teacher, Billy Roland for his encouragement on the camp.
Sustainability@St Albans SC
Assistant Principal, Ian Crocker has overseen many positive outcomes for the College’s environment this year. Thank you to Facilities Manager, Dave Fraser for his keen interest in sustainability at St Albans Secondary College. Dave has upgraded the waste management system; decommissioned the old boiler heating system; changed the lights to be more energy efficient and investigated the installation of solar panels. Not only are these actions good for the environment but also good for the College’s “bottom line!”
You may have noticed that the school grounds have undergone beautification this year, facilitated by Tony Gavrilovksi, Gardening Manager. Tony has also done a great job with the Year 7’s throughout the year, coordinating the yard duty roster. Thank you also to the cleaners who have worked very hard at maintaining the school building environs in an orderly state.
So what can the St Albans Secondary College community do? We can remember to turn off the lights and power switches when appropriate; use the school yard recycling bins correctly; recycle paper and only print when necessary; use the drinking taps wisely; consider composting; walk or ride to school and encourage each other to consider positive actions to care for the planet.
