The Happiness Cycle

Wednesday 9 September saw 49 intrepid students, Mr Micallef and Ms Annetts head to the State Basketball Center in Wantirna to participate in the Happiness Cycle; an event that sees students encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle through exercise. The encouragement was in the form of a free, new bike, helmet, front and rear lights, lock and bike education, supplied through one of St Albans’ partners, the Beacon Foundation.

Anita Webber, State Manager -Victoria for the Beacon Foundation, spoke of how the idea came about. “This great idea was developed by Bicycle Network and Beacon Foundation, who are both partners with the Coca-Cola Foundation and both not-for profit organisations, collaborated on this initiative to get kids onto bikes to encourage them to be active, as well as utilizing bikes as transport and for leisure purposes. We really wanted to see kids getting outdoors! From Beacon’s perspective it’s a great opportunity to offer bikes to Beacon students as a mode of transport and to enhance their lifestyles by offering them the opportunity to leave on a brand new bike.”

Once students had assembled their bikes and had their training, Mr Micallef and Ms Annetts played ‘tetris’ with 49 bikes, arranging them carefully into the Toll Transport truck for the long trip home.

St Albans Secondary College would like to acknowledge the generosity of Bacchus March Coaches who donated the coach trip to and from the venue, Toll Transport who donated a truck for the day and the Beacon Foundation who organized this wonderful day.
