Gomeroi Culture Academy

Gomeroi Culture Academy Welcome Ceremony

On Friday 14 February 2020 Wunda Jaffer-Williams and Cameron Smith were welcomed into the Gomeroi Cultural Academy at a special ceremony which aimed to recognise the inclusion of these new students into the academy for 2020.

The ceremony was held at the Tamworth Regional Youth Centre and was heavily supported by family, College representatives and members from all over the local Indigenous community.

Now members, both Wunda and Cameron will have the opportunity to participate in a culturally focused leadership experience which aims to support young people living in Tamworth NSW. The Gomeroi Cultural Academy  offers consistent mentorship and provides an opportunity for young people to learn more about Gomeroi culture, and build on and strengthen their personal identity.

Throughout 2020, GCA students will have the opportunity to:

  • Visit many cultural significant sites and events located around North West NSW.
  • Have weekly access to cultural mentors.
  • Meet regularly with other young people to focus on language, kinship and cultural practices together.

The GCA provides a formal learning pathway that harnesses the strength and knowledge that exists within our community to support our young people to create positive change.

We are very proud of both Wunda and Cameron and wish them the very best for their upcoming cultural journey.

If this is a program you would like your Aboriginal or Torres Strait child to participate in, or would just like more information, please do not hesitate to contact the school and ask to speak to either Maddi, Lisa (Aboriginal Education Assistants) or Jolene (Aboriginal Focus Officer).
