INTERMEDIATE BOYS HOCKEY

The Intermediate Boys Hockey team won through to the next round of competition in a thrilling finish. After comfortably dispatching Bentleigh (3-0) and Mordialloc (7-0) in the pool matches, McKinnon were seemingly in control of the final against Brighton before conceding a goal with seconds remaining to see the decider tied at 1-1, with penalty strokes to follow.

After the first five shots each, the teams were tied at 3-all, meaning sudden death penalties. Goals were scored, goals were saved and still, after a further five shots each, the teams could not be separated. A clutch save by goalie Michael Birkett allowed Marcus Sjostrom the chance to win it in the 12th round, and with the shot slotted safely into the corner, McKinnon were through, minus our fingernails!

Best players for the day included captain, Lachie Arneil, Luka Cote and Luka Duggan.

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS HOCKEY

Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls Hockey team who had a very successful Kingston Division Round Robin day on Thursday 18 August on Brighton Secondary College's hockey pitch. Wearing the favourite dresses, the team were very unified and supportive throughout the three matches.

Special mention to Chloe Swan although injured, willingly padded up in goals to finish with a clean sheet for the day - no goals scored against her! Zo-Ellen Stannus dominated the midfield and scored in every game and Simran Sehmi was a very valuable player in attack and defence.  The team easily defeated Brighton 3-1, Bentleigh 4-0 and Westall 3-0 to advance to the Southern Metropolitan Finals in November.

Well done girls for being great ambassadors for the school, your receptiveness to coaching and improving will hold you in good stead for the next round.

Go MCK!

BOYS FUTSAL

The Boys Futsal team did the college proud throughout a solid day of competition. Both the A and B teams won their divisions, with the A side comprehensively defeating Parkdale in the Final. The A team put on a master class of patient, possession-based futsal, whilst the B team played with considerable flair and intent.

Thanks to all the boys, who all played with talent, passion and camaraderie during the day. A special thanks to Johnson Duong (Year 10) for coaching the B side to victory.

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS FUTSAL

McKinnon took two teams to the Kingston Division Intermediate Girls Futsal competition on Thursday 18 August. The team containing all of the experienced futsal and soccer players was in a pool of three against Sandringham and Westall B. The other team took on Westall A and Parkdale. At the end of the pool games teams were ranked 1, 2 or 3 based on their results and then took on the other teams who finished in the same place in the other pools.

After watching Parkdale defeat Westall A comfortably, the inexperienced McKinnon team were defeated by Westall and then Parkdale to rank third in their pool. This meant that they were then due to take on Westall B and Mordialloc who had also finished third in their respective pools.

Against Westall, Stacey Katsambanis opened the scoring after some excellent goalkeeping by Meg Weng had thwarted a series of promising Westall attacks. Stephanie Xu and Chloe Bourke in defence also defended well to ensure that we took the 1-0 lead into half time lead. This lead was then extended in the second half. While Meg's goal was breached, Jess Ponsford and Tess McCartney both scored to ensure victory to the excitement of all. Jess and Tess scoring meant that they got the opportunity to bring out the goal celebration they had been working on earlier in the day. Mordy and Westall then drew to ensure McKinnon finished 7 of the 9 teams. A play-off for 6th ended in defeat to Bentleigh but the last kick of the day was a goal by Stacey Katsambanis and topped off four impressive performances by a group of players who did not have a lot of futsal experience coming into the competition.

The more experienced team won its pool games comfortably and played off in a finals pool against Brighton and Parkdale. Brighton were defeated 3-1 in the opening game with excellent combination plays between Chloe Sloman, Schuyler King and Stephanie Tsamourtzis causing Brighton continual problems in the first half and Teresa Morrissey making a number of good saves and timely interceptions. The game against Parkdale was 0-0 at half time because of further outstanding keeping by Teresa Morrissey and determined defending by all of the team. Teresa came out of goals in the second half and was replaced by Evelyn Yeh who had been making some significant contributions up front with Anthea Guerra in earlier games. McKinnon started excellently in the second half and put the Parkdale goal under pressure. We won a corner. The equation from the intermediate soccer comps earlier in the year was: Corner + Teresa = Goal. The equation in the futsal final was also Corner + Teresa = Goal: 1-0 ahead through a tried and trusted route. As the half wore on, however, Parkdale put more and more pressure on the McKinnon goal to try and keep themselves in the competition. Evelyn had looked nervous about keeping but when the pressure was on she responded like a seasoned professional. In the last two minutes alone she tipped a long range Parkdale drive over the bar, blocked a close range effort and then dived low to her right to stop a shot from nestling in the corner. The efforts of all contributed to the victory but Evelyn's goalkeeping heroics at the end were what ensured her team got over the line and meant that McKinnon won the Intermediate Girls Futsal competition.

Thank you to the players from both teams for their efforts on the day.

INTERMEDIATE ULTIMATE FRISBEE ROUND ROBIN

For the first time in years, the students were greeted by sunny skies, despite the presence of a strong wind. Five teams competed in the Round Robin, three of them being from McKinnon. We had plenty of highlights with all McKinnon teams (mixed) played really high level and close games against their opponents, in particular, against Westall who brought a team of all boys.

The students had a great time learning the game of Ultimate Frisbee and already, some students are beginning to get involved in clubs around Melbourne.

BASKETBALL REPORT

McKinnon Girls Basketball headed down to Dandenong Basketball stadium on Tuesday 18 August to compete in the Intermediate Girls Round Robin. Coach, Miss Greenwood, and fifteen other fantastic, ready to go, basketballers played five games of competitive basketball against other Kingston schools.

For the A team, all pool games resulted in smashing wins. Heading into the Finals, McKinnon A versed Parkdale, which was the toughest game yet, but the girls preformed outstandingly and pulled through with a perfect record. The B team did an amazing job winning the majority of their games against other A teams. McKinnon A moves onto the Southern Metropolitan Region Finals in October.
