MUSIC DEPARTMENT

It has been an amazing fortnight in the Music Department.  There have been many, many performances and competitions and the results have been outstanding.

VSMF (VICTORIAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL)

Each year the VSMF invites school bands and orchestras to perform in some of Victoria’s premier performing spaces to present the results of all the hard work and dedication of ensemble rehearsals. The festival provides schools with the opportunity to work with leading music educators. Following is a list of the outstanding work the various ensembles have achieved:

  • Friday 19 August: Ovenden Bandperformed in the Intermediate Concert Band Section – Silver. Thank you to Ms Tracy Videon for her continual development of this ensemble, and to Ms Su Rogerson, Ms Bernadette Russo and Mr Dmitry Serebrianik for their travel with the group on the day.

OTHER PERFORMANCES

listed below

THISTLELONIANS REUNION

Thanks to the String Quartet for performing at the Thistlelonians Year of '66 Class Reunion.

The ensemble performed a polished and entertaining program having been prepared by Ms Clare Bugeja to the delight of the many past McKinnon students attending the function. Thank you to Ms Tracy Videon who supervised the students on Sunday.

SOUTH STREET FESTIVAL BALLARAT

The school Orchestra travelled to Ballarat on Friday 26 August to perform at the long standing South Street Festival. The orchestra presented themselves very well on stage and performed a lengthy and challenging program with a good blend and balance.

Individual solo sections were played with musicality and flair which added sparkle to the performance. After their performance, there was time to listen to one more excellent group before starting the long trek home. As yet we are still awaiting results and feedback, but the main goal of performing and enjoying great music amongst peers from schools across Victoria was most triumphantly achieved.

Thank you to Ms Tracy Videon for her continual development of this group and organising the trip to Ballarat for the students to perform. Thank you also to Mr Serebrianik for his assistance in the travel to and from Ballarat.

The Clarinet Choirs (junior and senior), the Saxophone ensemble and the Flute group also attended the South Street Festival in Ballarat. All the ensembles presented outstanding performances and represented the school extremely well. Thank you to both Ms Su Rogerson and Ms Bernadette Russo for their ongoing development of these ensembles and supervision of the students to and from Ballarat.

MELBOURNE REGATTA

On Sunday 28 August students from the school Choir, the Clarinet Ensemble and various Brass Ensembles presented at the blessing of the fleets.  The Choir and Clarinet Choir (under the direction of Ms Blanka West and Ms Su Rogerson) were part of the formal ceremonies. The brass and woodwind students were then part of small performance groups for approximately an hour after the main ceremonies. Thank you to Ms Blanka West, Ms Su Rogerson and Ms Tracy Videon for their preparation and supervision of the students for this performance opportunity.

GLEN EIRA YOUTH ORCHESTRA

On Sunday 28 August the Senior Stage Band were invited to perform with the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra. The ensemble performed a program of 30 minutes in the enthusiastic and supportive environment that showcased their abilities as well as provide some valuable experience.  Congratulations to all students involved and to Mr Dmitry Serebrianik for his organisation of this event.

INSTRUMENT PERFORMANCE NIGHTS

It was a highly energetic night and demonstrated the students’ ongoing learning. Thank you to Mr Sergei Golovko for his organisation and coordination of this night.

On Tuesday 30 August all Brass students performed to their parents in the Lecture Theatre.
