College Council Report

School Council Report - October 2017

Council met once this term in October and will meet again in November. Council approved a number of policies and the 2018 parent payments as well as overseeing the school finances. Council approved the first GEC trip to Japan for 2018. This exciting opportunity for Year 7-10 students will be run in the September school holidays and have a science and culture theme.

Council approved the uniform sub-committee’s revisions to the GEC Uniform Policy for 2018 and saw a sample of the very smart-looking GEC branded rain jacket which will provide another useful uniform choice for GEC students. Survey feedback on the previous changes to the policy have been positive.

The Premier, Daniel Andrews, recently announced that it will be mandatory for all school councils to have student representation with full equal voting rights commencing next year.  I am proud that GEC has already had student reps on Council for the past two years and look forward to this important change rolling out to all Victorian Government secondary schools.  Student voice on Council is critical as they have insight into how school polices work on the ground and are a valuable addition to parent, staff and community representation on Council.

Students, staff and families participated in the Cancer Council’s Murrumbeena Relay for Life on 28th – 29th October. This is a fantastic community event - fundraising for a good cause that affects us all. In previous years, GEC has raised enough funds to fund a research program so let’s get fundraising.

If you can, please donate to the GEC Getting Even with Cancer Team –

Good luck to the Year 12s for their exams.  This can be a stressful time so take care and do your best. I recommend joining the GEC Old Students – GECOS Alumni to stay in touch with GEC when you finish school. Please email alumni@gec.vic.edu.au with your details (non-school email) to join GECOS.
