Congratulations Year 12 2017

Year 12 have finished their classes for the year and had a fabulous day out at Funfields for their last day. As they prepare for the start of their VCE Exams I wish them every success for their exams and future pathways. I am happy to see any Year 12 once they have left for their exams if they need to come and discuss courses and pathways with me, and of course once they have received their ATARs on 15th December.

University of Melbourne Hands on Engineering and IT Holiday Program

Dips Thaker from Year 10 was successful in applying to do this program in the September holidays.

"At the University of Melbourne Engineering and IT workshop, we explored Bitcoin's cyber security systems by understanding the basics of cryptography. Soon after, we developed mobile applications - specifically, my group programmed a voice recognition and command application which could translate the properties of motion from a sensor. Then we attended a lecture on Engineers Without Borders where we were challenged to design a mini water purification system that would cost under $50 with prices at stake (my group finished second place). Then finally we looked at biomedical engineering where we used VR headsets to understand the 3D structure of the heart and how engineers require delicate attention to details when design surgical equipment. Overall, the University staff were very supportive and successfully structured the day so students could maximise their learning while exploring the challenges engineers of the future will face through mini practicals."

TCS Asia Pacific Summit 2017, Sydney

Congratulations to Anika Dixit Year 10. Anika completed a week of work Experience earlier in the year with TATA Consultancy Services with their Go For IT girls program. Throughout the year TATA run work experience weeks aimed at girls in the Science, Technology and Engineering areas. TATA take on 25 students at a time, several times throughout the year.

Students were then able to apply to go to the National Conference in Sydney on 24th October. Anika was one of three successful applicants to be chosen to attend from Victoria.

Any Year 9 female student interested in applying for a work experience placement at TATA in their Go For IT please see me to check on dates for next year.

"Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is one of the leading global IT companies with 22 offices in 12 countries and the mastermind behind technological innovations of many major companies. TCS opens their doors to girls in Year 10 across Australia to join their GO4IT Program. This program aims to demystify computer science and assist many students to gain the skills and confidence essential to pursue STEM degrees and become future technology leaders. Earlier this year I was given the opportunity to complete my Year 10 Work Experience at TCS and following this program, I was invited to apply for the 2017 TCS Asia Pacific Summit, which explored the concepts around the Business 4.0: Intelligent, Agile, Automated, and on the Cloud. I had to write a short essay on why I would be a suitable candidate for the summit and what we would like to do post the summit. Given my passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and women empowerment, it was exciting to travel along with two other students from Victoria to Sydney to gain an insight into the world of business leaders and build connections with likeminded individuals. The summit brought along CEOs, CIOs and CTOs as well as executive business leaders from different regions of Asia to share their thoughts, concepts and insights surrounding the race to become smarter, faster and lighter enterprises.

The atmosphere of the Summit was breathtaking. It was not just a gathering of current and future leaders of technology, it was a celebration of the amazing achievements of how technology has changed people’s lives today. I questioned many business leader and executives about the future of technology and also explained my desire to promote STEM to young women. TCS provides invaluable opportunities for aspiring students to see what the global corporate environment is like. My incredible learning experience with TCS programs has encouraged me to appreciate the importance of STEM in our society and I hope that many of you will also be able to take advantage of such events."
