Secondary

Sorry Day And Reconcilliation Week

Sorry day was held on 26 May. Five of our Year 11 and 12 students attended the 'Sorry Day' event in Wellington Square, in order explore the experiences and impact of ‘Stolen Generation’ government policies on first Western Australian peoples. Our students hosted a stall and encouraged participants to make friendship bands.

Our Year 8 students were fortunate to be able to work with Scott Darlow on their Year 8 Retreat day. Scott is an Aboriginal man from Yorta Yorta country. He is a songwriter and musician and used his music to share his culture and the need for all of us to work towards a more inclusive Australia.

Religious Education classes in the Secondary Campus also spent time looking at the impact of Stolen Generation policies with the lens a justice perspective and considered the impact of this on people’s dignity and worth.

Year 9

Over the past couple of weeks Year 9 debaters worked very hard to prepare their arguments on the following topic: Religious Charities:

That religious charities operating in developing countries do more harm than good.

Both our teams had the affirmative case to argue and did an excellent job. Unfortunately, one of our teams had a forfeit. So, we won because of the forfeit, however, they had done a lot of excellent preparation and put a lot of time into the learning about Charities in third world countries. Our other team put up a wonderful fight but were narrowly beaten. For me the most exciting part of the debating competition is not about winning or losing but seeing the growth in our students each week as they gain greater confidence in articulating their arguments in a logical way and presenting their debate with energy and conviction.

Well done Year 9 debaters. Our teams are made up of the following students: Team JTC 2: Sophia Matthews, Phoebe Male, Ethan Quinlivan and Nick Brennan. Team JTC 3: Ivy Hooker, Teresa McCluskey, Ben Linsten, Adam Smith and James Langton.

Year 10s who are also in our division and had the affirmative side won their debate with a renewed confidence. It has been wonderful witnessing the following three boys: Rory Hewson, Cullen Binet and Charlie Richards show confidence and conviction in their debating this year.

Our next debate is on Tuesday 13 June. Our topic is: Celebrities US Election:  That we should regret the role of celebrities in the 2016 US Presidential election.

All teams have the negative argument.

Year 9 Community Mass Friday 9 June.

Parents and Students are reminded that the Community mass is being organised by Year 9 students. We would like to see as many parents and students at this mass at 7:55am in the College Chapel.

Our parent coordinators are hosting a morning tea after mass for all who can attend.  We look forward to seeing you at this celebration.
