Athletics Carnival 2019
McCarthy Catholic College Athletics Carnival was held at Tamworth Regional Athletics centre on Thursday 9 May. Some events were held at the College, with a number of students participating in the discus and javelin. The Carnival day was well attended and started with a large number of students keen to participate in the early events, 800 and 1500 metre. All events proved popular with participation rates high and a number of records being broken. The novelty events were a lot fun and students were able to gain valuable House points.
Thank you to Tamworth Little Athletics, Tamworth Regional Council and the College canteen for putting on some tasty food to fuel our students. Our senior students, in particular House Captains and Year 12 students are to be congratulated for promoting the Carnival both before and on the day. Their fancy dress costumes, enthusiasm and encouragement of younger students played a key role in making the day a success.
Friday 17 May saw an exciting conclusion to the athletics events with the running of the March Past, Aged Relays and Year 12 v Staff Relay. The atmosphere and cheering from all the students spectating on the hill was fantastic. There were some very close and fast relays. The boys and girls Open’s Relays were the highlight with a blistering pace set. The Year 12 v Staff Relay was a 50 metre event with 11 runners from the teachers who put in a good effort to narrowly finish behind the students.
The Sport Captains also ran a very successful bbq and food stall at lunch on the day of the relays, raising a total of $819.95 and all money raised went to Caritas. The Sport Captains, along with the House Patrons have done a brilliant job at both Carnivals and have shown a lot of initiative, effort and motivation in their roles.

On Monday 13 May the Under 15 boys played their Round 2 soccer game against Oxley High School. It was a fast paced match as play swept from one end of the field to the other and goals were at a premium. By half time the score was still 0-0 and the tension was obvious. McCarthy clearly had the advantage by dominating possession in the first half. It wasn’t until well into the second half that a break through arrived with William Albertson scoring a great goal from long range. Oxley rallied hard to get back into the match but superb goalkeeping by Kilian Apen prevailed and kept McCarthy in the lead. Brayden Boonstra who recently returned from representative duties in Tokyo secured the win with a wonderful long range goal from outside the box. Well done to Mr Ronny Rindo who has been regularly training the boys and this was evident in the cohesion they showed on the field. The boys are now looking forward to their Round 3 clash against Farrer Memorial High School on 4 June. The team included: Brayden Boonstra, Kilian Apen, Eoin Shepherd, William Albertson, Jack Stanton, Brady Painter, Augustin Monet, Connor Budden, Louis Johnson, Benjamin O’Connor, Ethan Ross, Achille Monet, Seamus Shepherd, Edward Williams and Frederick Williams.
