The student leaders hope to encourage the Year 9 cohort to become more aware of their local environment and how fragile it can be. They will be concentrating on decreasing the amount of litter around the school and encouraging all students to use the bins . They are also wanting to start up lunchtime activities and clubs, such as the year 9 writing club and the painting of 4 square courts in the year 9 area.
This year we have many exciting and interesting programs planned for the year 9 students.
In Term 1 we have been working on Growth Mindset and Respect, two very important skills and values we want to instill in the cohort.
Term 2 will be preparation for The Naplan Testing and looking at the many aspects of ‘Responsible Choices’ and ‘Mental Health’.
Term 3 begins with the year 9 Melbourne Experience Camp, from the 11th – 13th July. We will then be working on career pathways and subject selection. Our aim is to ensure your students have a clear understanding of how to plan a career pathway and what subjects they will be required to undertake through year 10 and VCE to help them achieve the best possible outcomes.
Term 4 sees all students being involved in a community project, raising money and/or awareness about issues they feel are important in our local, wider or global community.
We have eight students who have been selected to attend Alpine School at the Gnurad Gundidj Campus for Term 2.
“At the school students live and work in a very close environment with up to 45 of their peers. There is a great deal of independence offered to the students. The students are responsible for helping maintain the school, organising rosters, for doing various jobs around the school and generally controlling the nature of their home and place of learning.”
The students attending the Alpine School are pictured above: Kaleb Morrison, Lara Topluoglu, James Seward, Ben Golotta, Brynee Clarke, Sebastian Zelseko, Temeka Adie and Grant Baxter.
We wish them well and cannot wait to hear about their experiences when they return to Dromana College in Term 3

Year 9 Design and Technology
My name in Madison Gard and I am in Miss Russell’s wood class. This is a picture of my pencil holder that looks like a big pencil. I designed and made it from recycled timbers. I can use it to hold pencils and other writing materials. It was cut and I sanded it forever and then painted it. I screwed it onto the oiled backing board which was a bit scary as I hadn’t used a power drill before. It was fun making it and I enjoyed making it.
