Open Days 2019

Open Days are a great time to visit an institution when it’s at its best. Everyone is there – academics, lecturers, current students and information officers. More importantly, you can talk with academics, lecturers and

current students about what certain courses are actually like and what is required to get into them. For dates and times please download a copy of the 2019 Tertiary Open Days below.

VCA - Girls Do Jazz 2019 Workshops

Girls Do Jazz 2019 workshops aim to address the gender imbalance in jazz music by giving young students an opportunity to hear, interact, converse and perform with women who are following professional pathways in jazz and improvised music. Workshop sessions will incorporate a repertoire of blues, jazz standards, modal playing, original tunes and free improvisation. Students will learn about improvised music, foster relationships with emerging and established musicians and engage with a like-minded creative community. They will also develop their musical skills and career path through informal performances, rehearsals and discussions. This course is suitable for 15-20 year-old, female and gender-non-conforming student instrumentalists with an interest in jazz and improvisation and those intending to audition for Jazz and Improvisation at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at Melbourne in the future.

When: 11 August, 8 September, 13 October, 10 November and 8 December (at the Jazzlab as part of the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival) Cost: $525

Future Park Design Ideas Competition: New Public Space for Melbourne

Considered the fourth fastest growing city in the OECD, Melbourne is expected to eclipse Sydney as Australia’s largest city by 2050. This population growth and densification raises questions over the capacity of our existing parks to meet the needs of today’s contemporary and bourgeoning city. The Future Park Design Ideas Competition encourages entrants to envision new public spaces for modern Melbourne. Where should this new public open space be located, how should it be configured and what is its role?

Entries close: 1 August 2019

Who can enter?: Victorian high school students studying art, design, environmental studies and associated subjects are invited to submit proposals within the student category.

Entry requirements: One A1 panel (portrait) which graphically (through the combination of image and text) presents the location and vision for your future park.

Prize: Work experience at a landscape architecture office.

Throughout YLP, participating students are guided and mentored by a team of university students.

Parent and Caregivers Guide to University

This one is courtesy of Deakin but you can apply most of the information to any institution. Parents and caregivers play an important role in providing guidance, information and support to their child as they plan their future and consider their further study options. It can be hard to know the best way to offer support to your child when it comes to choosing a course of study and a university. Deakin has put together some great tips on how to help your child stay focused and start developing the skills needed for university. I hope you find it helpful.

Year 10 VTAC Guide

As a Year 10 student about to choose your Years 11 and 12 study program, it can all seem a little overwhelming. But if you break it down into steps, it becomes more manageable. This guide has some great activities and resources to help you with some of the next steps which will be about subject selection. Some of these activities you may have participated in as part of our Careers Elective but it doesn't hurt to take another look at them.

This guide is produced by VTAC (the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) so some of the information is more relevant for studying the VCE, however a lot of the information applies no matter what educational system you complete.

Inside you will find more tips on researching tertiary education, entrance requirements, pre-requisite studies, selection process, ATAR information, VET studies and pathways, culminating in bringing all your research together and creating a plan.

Once you have created a plan it is time to make an appointment to meet me and discuss some of your options so you are well and truly prepared when it comes to selecting the right subjects.

Remember my quote.. "Start with the D.R.E.A.M".

Note: A hard copy is now available from the Careers Hub in the cottage.
