Sports Report

Welcome back to everyone and I hope you had a relaxing and sporty summer! This year will no doubt be another busy and exciting one with a continued emphasis on sport at College and a new Cultural Framework and Vision for our sporting program getting further entrenched into the ethos of the school.

All the regular local and inter-school competitions will be taking place as well as new and exciting possibilities in our sporting program for students to be involved in at a higher level of learning and competition. Racquet Sports (Tennis, Squash and Table Tennis) will again be offered as a regular sporting opportunity during the year and continues to expand with a new GD Term 1 Middle Years Tennis competition, so please email Mrs Katie Winter Cooke if you are interested in playing in the local competitions.

We look forward to a vibrant and exciting year of Glenelg Division Competition as we strive once again to win the big three events – swimming, athletics and cross country. The ICCES sporting events will continue to be challenging for our students, and the keen table tennis and badminton players at school can once again look forward to competing in Melbourne (at MSAC) on 4 March, the same day as ICCES Swimming.

Families should also be aware that we are an affiliated member of School Sport Victoria which means that our students can nominate to attend selection trials for state sporting teams under this banner. If you would like to know more about this, please look on the following website – www.ssv.vic.edu.au as the first step to find important information, and contact myself if necessary. Some sports have registration and trial processes underway and finishing at the end of February so get on the website soon. Under this agreement our secondary students can also compete in the All SCHOOLS Athletics and Cross Country championships.

At this point of the year I would like to remind you all that correct school sports uniform must be worn to all inter-school sporting competitions or students will not be able to participate. So please purchase the required items of clothing from the uniform shop as necessary – this includes tracksuit pants to venues on colder days. Coloured “House shirts” must also be worn to compete in any Inter-house sporting event so it will be important for all students to keep track of when House Afternoons are allocated in the Calendar and at lunchtimes.

The school’s sporting Code of Behaviours document that includes our cultural framework/vision for the sporting program has already been distributed to all families and we are asking that all current and perspective players, coaches, managers, administrators and parents involved in the College Sporting program, please read, sign and return it to myself ASAP and of course adhere to it during the year.

The number of students playing team sports for College teams is very pleasing and I would dearly love to see even more students making the commitment to their school friends and the school itself to play at least one team sport for a College team in 2020. It is also vitally important that all students who put their name down to play a sport fully commit to that sport via the means of regular attendance at training and games. Otherwise they are letting their teammates and coaches down and it puts a lot of stress and extra work on team managers also. Communication and commitment are paramount for all sporting activities at the school.

The annual Inter House Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 11 February at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. I’m keen to hear from any parent, family member or community member who can volunteer their time to help timekeeping for part or all the day. The College’s best swimmers will then compete at the Glenelg Division (GD) Swimming Sports on Thursday 20 February in Portland. A reminder that every Year 7-12 student is welcome to attend Swimming training on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 4-5pm at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool and some Thursday mornings at HILAC from 7-8am. Training sessions are taken by our Swimming Coach, Mr Ben Singh, and are free of charge.

Basketball

As we start the new school year, it is important that everyone that will be involved in the upcoming season is aware of what was advertised late last year in regards to the NEW REGISTRATION process (see below) and if you haven't already, you need to act on this ASAP to be organised and not be in jeopardy of missing Round 1.

In 2020, the registration process for basketball will be slightly different. All coaches and players will be required to register online. There is no cost for coaches to register, however, players will need to pay the BVC fee and the HBA fee when registering.

To register, you will need to first create an account and then follow the steps to complete the registration process. This can be accessed at the links below. Students who are playing both Juniors and Seniors basketball will need to register twice, once as a junior and once as a senior player. Registration is now open and we are asking players and coaches to register early.

CLEARANCES and PERMITS FOR JUNIORS PLAYING SENIORS - Forms for these can be found on the HBA Website and it is up to the individuals involved to get them signed by and returned to the appropriate people.

TEAMS

These will not be finalised until week 2 of school and then they need be approved by the HBA at a meeting the following week. Players, Coaches and Team Managers will then be notified. Juniors and Seniors start the season on the week commencing Monday 17 February.

Cricket

A warm welcome back to the College cricketers. I have the honour of taking on the role of Head of Boys’ Cricket for 2020. This is certainly something I do not take lightly and hope I can carry on the incredible work and the platform that my predecessor, Stephen Mirtschin has built.

A little background about myself; I grew up in Warrnambool and have played cricket since U12s and have continued playing throughout adult life. Cricket has certainly been an avenue where I have met some incredible people and is a sport that has provided me with some amazing opportunities and experiences. Cricket has taken me to Geelong and then to England where I lived for over five years. From the passion I have witnessed within the juniors at the College Cricket Club, it is a sport that will shape many in their coming years, if not their lives.

This summer has certainly seen some incredible individual and team contributions made by our many talented juniors. Western Waves and Hamilton representative sides have been full of College Cricket Club juniors and this shows the hard work by all coaches, parents and club members is paying off. I would like to thank all involved who continue to ensure the club runs as smoothly as it does. A special mention to Eliza Jagger, Grace Austin and Maddie Green who were a part of a State title winning girls team. Maddie has also been selected to represent Victoria in the girls U15 team. A massive congratulations to Maddie, but also a definitive sign of our elite female pathways that are within the College program.

Updated on the College Oval Redevelopment Project

As many are aware, the College Cricket Club, in collaboration with The Hamilton and Alexandra College, Cricket Australia and the College-Magpies Junior Football Club embarked on a project to completely redevelop the Oval late in 2019. Since this point, we have seen a huge job culminate into a fully irrigated, lush playing surface that will soon be surrounded by a traditional white picket fence. This has been an ambitious project valued at over $120,000, much of it being funded by the sale of panels or pickets in the new fence.
