Special Education News

A great first term has been had by all in Special Education. Our new year 7 students settled in quickly and embraced all that Henry Kendall High School offers. An outstanding number of our students attended and competed in the schools swimming carnival and as usual those who were unable to compete had an opportunity to get wet in organised novelty events in the indoor and hydro therapy pools.

Many of our students in the senior years are involved in Tafe through Tvet Access courses or short courses. Angelica Matthews-Muller, Freddie Monk and William Mullins are enjoying their Thursdays at Ourimbah Tafe completing their Hospitality course. Conrad Hope and Cameron Weatherby completed a one week Garden and Landscaping course at Wyoming Eco Garden and both students have ongoing work placement there too.

Other work-placements are being undertaken by some of our students both in and out of school. Ebony Wright has been working at Gosford RSL on a Wednesday. Josh Lyons has been working at Kibble Kapers and Coast Shelter. Wanda Rassmussen has just started a work-placement at Bookface and is enjoying the challenges that a job in retail brings. We would also like to thank the businesses and community groups that make our workplaces a reality.

Next term is a big one with "Come and Try" day and the start of our athletic season. We hope to see as many of our students progress through our various carnivals that many of our students do so well in. Please remember to encourage your children to always take up the opportunities that our great school offers.

Mr Peter Yates

Head Teacher Special Education

Thank you!!!!

A huge thank you to Mr Noel Brewer and Tom Brewer (graduated student), for the generous donation of a new greenhouse shade cloth for our Industry Workshop Project.

We are working towards developing new skills and growing products to help assist us for future work life and employment.

Walk and Talk Program

This year some of the students from the Special Education Centre have been taking part in a daily exercise program. During Roll Call students and staff do a few brisk laps around the COLA. This is a popular time with the students as it gives them an opportunity to start the day in an active way. They enjoy the fresh air and having time to chat with their friends before going into class for lessons. Poppy, the therapy dog often joins us and students are eager to lead her on the walk. Next term some volunteer, mainstream students will also take part in the program. We are hoping the interaction will help develop conversation skills and be socially beneficial for all.

School Flags

This year we have several pairs of students from the Special Education Centre who are rostered on the Flag Duty Roster. Each morning students raise the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. At the end of the school day the students lower the flags and fold them ready for the next day. This duty is part of the In-School Work Experience Program organised by Mrs Alex Koltsis for students in the Special Education Centre. Students enjoy doing this important task for our school and are developing reliability and team work skills which will assist them in the future.
