CAPA News

Creative & Performing Arts

Can I say thank you to all that have welcomed me to Henry Kendall High School as your new Head Teacher - Creative and Performing Arts. It has been a wonderful change from my previous role at Wadalba Community School, where I spent a many great years as the HT CAPA as well. A different setting and context makes it an exciting new adventure and I have been made feel welcome from the students and the CAPA team.

The 2019 Team is:

Jarrod Walters (Music/Photography), Mary Gillard (Music/Photography/Visual Art), Jade Draper (Drama/Music), Gemma Lucca (Visual Art & Learning Support), Dawn Keft (Visual Art) and Janelle Wilkinson (Visual Art/Student Services).

Celebrating student success drives the CAPA department and we need to sing the praises of last years HSC cohort that was one of our best performing. Nearly all students in a CAPA courses last year made it their top performing result, indicating the passion and dedication demonstrated by all of them.

Congratulations to Nikau Davis, and Dawn Keft (HSC Visual Arts teacher 2018), whose art work was accepted into the Artexpress Exhibition for this year.

Also on the point of high achievers from last years HSC, Music 1’s Sophie Eickelman was invited to perform at ‘Resprise’, a concert at the Newcastle Conservatorium Concert Hall for the best Music performances in the Newcastle / Central Coast region for 2018

Continuing with the theme of exhibiting students works, Henry Kendall High School featured in the annual Central Vision Exhibition at the Gosford Art Gallery with Alex Singleton’s photomedia work used as the advertising material for the event. These works are only scratching the surface of the creative talent at Henry Kendall High School, please keep an eye on the Henry Kendall High School - Creative and Performing Arts Facebook page where we are continually showcasing student success across all our subjects and years.

Our classrooms have been a hive of activity with Music, Visual Art, Drama and Photography our areas of expertise. From Year 7 through to HSC Year 12, we are studying and researching a wide variety of topics that have historical, cultural, social and education significance in our everyday lives. This includes; Year 7 Visual Art creating Notan Art, Year 8 creating Organic Art drawings, Expressive and Mixed Media works from our Year 9 and 10 Visual Artists; Introduction to Photography, Portrait Photography and Photoshop manipulation for our Stage 5 and Year 11 Photography students.

The Music students in Years 7 and 8 have been working through Drumming Workshops and Assessment and are just initiating the Guitar Workshops. Electronic Music is on the horizon for Term 2. Our year 9 music students have been working on Film and Gaming Music composition tasks and Year 10 are hard at work refining their listening and performing skills. Year 11 are working through Australian Music and the HSC Music 1 students are putting together their final Programs for the September HSC Practical Period.

Adding to the fun of all these activities we had a wonderful visit from our Japanese Exchange students who participated in a range of Drama, Music and Art Classes.

HSC Music compositions were a great success in Term 1 with students rising to the challenge of capturing an idea, developing and refining within the space of 1 minute, and communicating visually through Graphic Notation their musical ideas for all to share. Some great, innovative sounds were found from each students individual instruments, with a little help from technology.

Likewise our Drama HSC Students who are planning and refining their Individual and Group performances and establishing and documenting their individual Elective Components ranging from Script Writing, Costume Design to Video and Filming.

Events coming up in Term 2 include the HSC Music 1 Study Day, On Track Performance Night  and our Individual Instrument Teaching Lessons continue with a couple of spaces left for Term 2. If you are interested in these, please see myself or Mrs Gillard in the CAPA staff room for an information note. We currently have spots for drumkit in the 7:30am time-slot and vocals at 8.00am.

Looking forward to another exciting and creative term.
