Open Girls Netball

The team played Terrigal High School in Round 1 in the CHS Knockout competition on 12 March. Despite playing hard for the whole game the girls were unable to match the speed and experience of the Terrigal team. I would like to commend them for their effort, teamwork and sportsmanship. I would also like to farewell our Year 12 who played their last match for Henry Kendall High School - Marley Irvine, Miranda Miller, Hannah Casey and Francis Smith. In particular the team would like to acknowledge the efforts of Marley who has been our captain for the last few years -she has led from the front and has been a great assistance to me.

Open Girls Basketball –vs Narrabeen Sports High

Earlier this Term the Open Girls Basketball team came up against Narrabeen Sports high in the Sydney North Knockout.  It was a spirited effort by the girls but they had met their match with Narrabeen having three state players in their team. While our girls were defeated, the girls always demonstrated a positive attitude and gave 100% effort. Well done girls.

Open Girls Soccer – vs Asquith Girls High School

The Open Girls soccer team recently played against Asquith Girls at Pennant Hills Park. A hard fought contest between the two teams ending in a 2-1 loss to Henry Kendall. There were some outstanding performances from Khyra Dickey (Year 7), Larna Homer (Year 8), Sally Toohey (Year 11) and Paris Blair (Year 12). The future of girls’ soccer is in good hands at Henry Kendall High School and we look forward to seeing how the girls progress in the NSW Futsal Championships in Term 2.

Open Boys Soccer

On Friday 22 March our Open Boys Soccer/Football team played at Pennant Hills park on the artificial grass oval against Gorokan High. The game had been rescheduled from the previous Monday as it was a wash out. The game started fairly evenly and then against the run of play Gorokan scored a nice header from a corner to make it 1-0. Following this we again dominated the play and had numerous shots at their goal, narrowly missing every time. They scored again from a shot taken with lots of “traffic” in front of our keeper, making it almost impossible to see the ball.

In the second half we dominated the game more and more as time went on, peppering their goal with shots. We finally scored with a nice goal by Mitchel Wood just after half time, making it 2-1. We scored the equaliser that was then declared to be off- side. Gorokan again against the run of play got another goal, making the final score 3-1. We had approximately 65% possession, hit the crossbar 6 times, were in their half for 65% of the time and had 6 shots at goal for each 1 of theirs, but we just couldn’t convert (partly due to their keepers effort). The boys all played exceptionally well and demonstrated good sportsmanship- as did our opponents.

Congratulations Jack Josephs, Jarrod Parker, Jack Rogers, Joel Dickey, Patrick Bull, Tariq Haddad, Mitch Wood, Nic Bartarseh, William Day, Matt Pross, Oliver Worrad, Tom Marsh, Tamer Tetik, Tom Bennett & Jack Goncalves on a game well played.

PDHPE

Term 1 has been an exciting time for students in their PDHPE classes. They have participated in a wide variety of physical activity opportunities and have been involved in some meaningful learning activities within the classroom. Additionally, Term 1 is a busy time for competitive sport with a variety of knockout teams taking to the fields and courts for competition.  We also held our School Swimming Carnival early in the term which has subsequently been followed by both Zone and Sydney North Swimming meets where we have had students progress and perform exceptionally well.

In our practical lessons, we introduced a new unit across Stage 4 and Stage 5 with a focus on the components of fitness. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that aim to measure their levels of fitness and provide discussion points on how to live healthy active lifestyles. Many of our students exceeded their own expectations and found specific areas that they performed well in despite their original perceptions. The PDHPE staff are very proud of the students’ effort throughout the unit and hope that they continue to work on their physical fitness and implement further physical activities into their lifestyle.

In the classroom, the students have been studying a range of topics. Year 8 have been linking the work done in their practical lessons by exploring other components of lifestyle and how they can affect an individual’s risk of chronic disease. Year 9 have focused their study on the areas of nutrition and body image while Year 10 have focused on Mental Health. Students studying the elective: Physical Activity and Sports Studies have studied the principles of training and worked in groups to create coaching videos for athletes.

Within our Stage 6 courses, students have worked exceptionally well to develop their knowledge and build upon the skills required to perform well in a senior pathway. The Year 11 CAFS and PDHPE classes have been producing some outstanding work and both teachers of these courses have reported the high level of application being demonstrated by the students. The Year 12 CAFS and PDHPE courses are now approaching the halfway point and the improvements displayed by the students have been extremely pleasing.

On behalf of the PDHPE faculty, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to having the students return for what promises to be an action packed Term 2.
