Student Wellbeing

Staff at St Joseph's are committed to the teaching of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) through explicit teaching, implementing these skills, knowledge and attitudes throughout other academic areas (eg.collaborative group work, sporting games) and through our daily routines that promote personal, social and emotional capabilities. Within SEL, all levels have been working on developing greater EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE through activities that promote self-awareness and self-management in :

- IDENTIFYING THE DIFFERENT EMOTIONS THEY EXPERIENCE

- MANAGING THESE to be able to be function effectively to achieve their goals

Sarah Conway, child psychologist of over 15 years of clinical experience and author of 'Mindful Little Minds' offers some wonderful parent tips for supporting your child at home in developing these SEL competencies.  She says:

"In my experience, the first step is to be mindful of the messages we are sending children about emotions and how we manage them. That means changing the way we speak about emotions and also the way we manage them ourselves.

And there are 5 key messages about emotions that children need to understand before they can learn to manage them effectively.

1. All feelings are okay.

2. Feelings come and go.

3. Feelings are messengers.

4. Feelings don't come from nowhere.

5. You can choose how to respond to emotions.

By teaching your child these five essential lessons about emotions, you can create a safe, supportive environment for them to express themselves, and lay the foundations for a lifetime of emotional well being and healthy, fulfilling relationships."
