Grade 1 and 2

Welcome to Term 2! We hope you enjoyed the break. 

Living Things

This term we are learning about 'Living Things'. 

This week we started looking at living and non living things. We discussed what makes a living thing a living thing - students sorted out animals, plants and objects into living and non living things. Students provided reasons like being able to breathe, move, grow and reproduce as to why their item was living. 

We will continue to investigate this unit in the classroom and with opportunities on our excursions and incursions. 

Literacy

In literacy this term, we are looking at reading and writing information texts. Students have loved looking at non-fiction texts this week and finding facts to share with the class. We are looking at the elements of information texts - title, contents page headings & subheadings, diagrams, index page and glossary. 

Throughout this term, students will continue working on identifying the features of an information text, researching facts about living things and creating their own information texts. 

Numeracy

We have started Term 2 Numeracy with Data Representation. Students have been gathering data by asking their peers a question, using tally marks to collect the data, writing up tables and interpreting data in picture graphs (pictographs). 

We had a lot of fun today collecting data using Skittles. Each student sorted their skittles by colour, tallied the amount of each colour, displayed this in a picture graph and definitely enjoyed eating them! 

We looked at how each of us had different results - which colour occurred the most? Which colour occurred the least?
