Year 2 News
Welcome back to Term 2
It was wonderful to see the Year 2 students return to school last Monday reading for a full day of learning. During our circle time the students shared about their holiday activities and all the fun they had with family and friends. It is going to be another busy term full of exciting activities and learning.
Year 2 Incursion- Brainstorm Productions -Zanna and the Lost Code
Last Wednesday 26 May the Year 2 students participated in a Wellbeing Incursion called, ‘Zanna and the Lost Code.
The Story of 'Zanna & the Lost Code' is about a girl called Zanna who loves to play video games. One day Zanna goes to a special camp to learn how to make her own video game. The camp is called Coding Camp. Zanna is worried about going to Coding Camp because Zac and Zoe will be there. Zac and Zoe are always mean to Zanna and make her feel sad. Zanna doesn't know how to make them stop. The boss of the camp is Camp Captain. He's making a game for children, but his game isn't very safe. When Zanna gets to camp she meets a really nice kid called Eddie. Eddie and Zanna realise that the Camp Captain just wants to make money. He doesn't care if kids are bullied or feeling sad or worried when they're playing his game. So they decide to zap themselves into Camp Captain's Top Secret Device. They use their skills and strengths to change the game and make it safe and fun for kids.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and were engaged throughout. The incursion provided a variety of important messages about how the students can stay safe online and what to do if they are receiving unwanted messages or nasty comments. The strong message that came through was, ‘Knowledge is Power’.
Literacy
Our week began with the students completing a narrative writing piece titled, ‘Imagine’. The students had to imagine a character finding something that made something amazing happen. This piece of writing will be used as a moderation piece that we will compare with other schools in our network to ensure we are all marking our writing consistently. The students wrote some wonderful pieces.
This week during our Literacy Group rotations the students once again looked at the comprehension strategy of ‘Back up and Reread’. This strategy involves the students going back to the beginning of a sentence or paragraph if the meaning of the story is lost and rereading it. It teaches the students to think about what they are reading and how to comprehend the text.
We also continued looking at nouns and completed a fun sheet called, ‘Gumball nouns’ where the students had to identify whether the noun was a person, place or thing. The students spent time, listening to each other read and listening to a story on the classroom whiteboards. During the writing component the students continue with their ‘Magic Key’ writing from last term and finally enjoyed completing some rainbow spelling with this week’s focus the digraph /ea/ making the sound ‘E’ as in beach.
Maths
The Year 2 students have continued to investigate telling the time to both quarter to and quarter past on both an analogue and digital clock. They have completed Maths with Someone, which is part of the Daily 3, by playing a telling the time board game and Time Match (Quarter hour).
They have created their own time for a mini book called “What’s the Time Mr Wolf?, by writing clues to explain where the minute hand (big hand), and little hand (the hour hand) points, whether the time was an am or pm time and by writing the time in words. They also had to draw the correct hands on the analogue clock and write the corresponding digital time.
Then the children individually read their clues and the rest of students had to make the time described on their own clocks and write the digital time. We then talked about how they knew they had made the correct time and showed the time on the interactive clock. The children also had the opportunity to practise their telling the time by playing various interactive games on the laptops/ipads.
We have started learning about addition and strategies we can use to work out the answers to problems, such as using a number line or hundred board. We brainstormed what we knew about addition and then watched a video to learn a bit more. The children played lots of fun games with someone such as Tic Tac Toe to try and make a sum of 15 and number hive addition to practise basic addition skills.
PYP -Who We Are
A balanced lifestyle is influenced by the choices people make.
Over the past two weeks the students have enjoyed diving into our latest unit of inquiry. Last week the students spent time looking through various books from our school Library about having a healthy lifestyle, including the types of food we should eat and the types of exercise we should do.
The students worked with a partner, and all choose a book to complete their research. The students then presented their findings to the class. We were so proud of their efforts and the fact that they were risk takers presenting to their classmates. We hope you enjoy our photographs of this activity.
The second part of our lesson involved the student’s investigating what they can do to stay active and what happens to our body when we exercise. The students' responses were as follows:
Your face goes red
Your heart beats faster
Your body sweats
You puff
Your muscles might hurt
You might get thirsty
The students then completed a ‘Just Dance sequence’ which was lots of fun. We certainly have some great movers and shakers in Year 2. We were then able to identify some of the changes that occur in our body after exercising. We hope you enjoy our video.
