WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC

Salvo's Cook

Friday 5th June 2020

We created 410 meals, which brings the running total to 1549 meals (that’s a whopping 990 litres of soups).

A big thank you to the VCAL team and our volunteers for the day: Abbey Speed, Steve Fenwick, Madeline Wright, Mark Philpott, James Ashley, Pete Raidme, Luci Reuben and of course Simon Gale and Steve Robertson in the kitchen.

We had some film crew from Channel 10's The Project come on-site and filmed some footage which will be televised in the coming weeks. Filming went smoothly and there is some great footage of all involved!

Friday 29th May 2020

We managed 467 serves of soup (326.9 litres).

A big thank you to our helpers: VCAL Team, Zoe Christie, Pete Raidme, Mark Philpott, and Sharon Harris. A special mention to our kitchen duo Simon Gale and Steve Robertson.

Non Perishables - Community Donations

We have been creating parcels of non perishables for families in our school community and Mark and Pete have been doing house visits to distribute them.

We have been inundated with these donations and have been able to pass on many boxes to the Salvos as well!

Many thanks,

Jacqui and Pete

VCAL News

The VCAL group was straight back on the tools upon their return to school planning, ordering and building a vegetable garden around our VCAL space. Soil and planting of a range of winter vegetables will complete the project on Friday and the group is looking forward to growing and then harvesting our produce.

Youth Pod Refurbishment

Students from Surf Coast Secondary College are being given the chance to redevelop the shire’s Youth Pod.

The pod, which was created from a shipping container, was moved from Winchelsea Skate Park to the school grounds last month ready for the students. It was created with support from the local Lions Club and businesses to give young people a place to socialise and access different services. The redevelopment of the pod will be part of Surf Coast Secondary College’s Hands On Learning program, which looks to provide students with different methods of learning not offered by traditional education.

“The students are excited to get stuck into the refurbishment of the Youth Pod and turn it into something special that can be enjoyed by young people across the Surf Coast. It is a great opportunity for the students to develop a range of trade skills, such as framing, cladding, painting, flooring, all the way down to some general maintenance. To have a project built by youth and delivered to youth in the same shire will be an amazing achievement; one which our students will be very proud of. Once the students have finished working on the pod, it will be returned to the community. The students will learn practical skills that they can use throughout life and they get to really take ownership of the project".

Library News

We do have restrictions on numbers but if you need to return your books or borrow one please pop in, there are tubs at both the entry and exit doors (remember to please sanitise your hands before touching any books). If you would like some recommendations or to read the library news - this information can be found on the Years 7-9 wellbeing pages on Canvas.

I wanted to share with you 30 benefits of reading.

Below are the first 5, stay tuned for the next instalment in the following newsletter.

1. Gives knowledge

One of the biggest reasons why we read books is to gain knowledge. Books are a rich source of information. Reading books on varied subjects imparts information and increases the depth about the subject as well. Whenever you read a book, you learn new information that otherwise would not have known.

2. Improves your brain

Studies have shown that reading has strong positive effects on the brain. By staying mentally stimulated, you can prevent Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This is due to keeping your brain active, which prevents it from losing power. The brain is a muscle and like other muscles in the body, exercise keeps it strong and healthy. Similar to solving puzzles, reading books is a great way to exercise your brain and keep it healthy.

3. Reduces stress

Reading has a positive effect on the body as well. Reading a book can relieve stress better than taking a walk or listening to music. According to studies, people who read more tend to have lower stress levels.

4. Improves memory

Every time you read a book, you have to remember the setting of the book, the characters, their backgrounds, their history, their personalities, the sub-plots and so much more. As your brain learns to remember all this, your memory becomes better. What’s more, with every new memory you create, you create new pathways and this strengthens the existing ones.

5. Improves imagination

The more you read, the more imaginative you become. Whenever you read a fiction book, it takes you into another world. In the new world, your imagination works at its best as you try to see things in your own mind.
