Deputy Principal's News

Dear Parents,

We are fast approaching the end of Term 2 (Semester 1).  A  Semester which will go down in history for the way that we all worked together to continue to provide an education for your children, our students.  We all made it through by working together and we should all be congratulated.  Going forward we now know what is possible if we need to return to remote learning.  All the students are happy to be back at school, socialising with their peers.  We are now all counting down to the school holidays.  An opportunity to switch off the devices and enjoy some down time together with our families.

Next week the students commence their school holidays at 1.30pm on Friday 26th June.  We will have a staggered pick up utilising the same drop off / pick up areas, just different times.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their invaluable support and contribution this term, Staff, Students and Parents.  We have an AMAZING school and community.

School Reports (June 2020)

The Semester 1 school reports will be shared with all families via Nforma Parent portal on Friday 26th June.  As already mentioned in previous correspondence the June reports will look different.  They have been simplified to accommodate for Remote Learning.  In Semester 2, (December) the students will receive a comprehensive student report for the year.

Further information regarding how to access the parent portal and student reports will be shared early next week.

With the school holidays fast approaching, I would like to remind all families about ensuring students are safe online.

Here is a copy of the correspondence that was sent out last week via email.

Google Meet and Google Hangouts

The staff and students in years 3-6 have been using Google Meet and Google hangouts during remote learning to teach, learn and seek clarification during school hours.  Now that the students are learning onsite it is no longer necessary for these two platforms to be used.  The students were informed yesterday that they are not to use these platforms to communicate with their peers or the teachers.  The apps are still active, however Google will disable them in the coming weeks.  A reminder also that the student’s school email address should be used solely for school purposes and should not be used to set up APPs or sign up to gaming websites etc.

This brings me to the next point, which is the use of Tik Tok for primary school students.  The esafety commissioner website clearly states that Tik Tok is for students over the age of 13. We want to remind parents that student safety especially is paramount at all times.  Whilst some of these platforms appear to be entertaining, they are not always age appropriate and the audience is unknown.  Please see the attached parent support link for further information  https://support.tiktok.com/en/privacy-safety/for-parents-default

Fortnite is another application which is not age appropriate for students in primary school.  If your child is involved in playing these or similar games at home, you may wish to have a discussion with them.  Please find attached further information.  https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide/fortnite-battle-royale

The following esafety link provides accurate information about some of the frequently used apps which your children may be using outside of school.  I encourage all families to look through the list and make an informed decision about which applications may be suitable for your children to be using outside of school

St James Catholic Primary School (School Portal) formally (Remote Learning Portal)

As you are well aware Remote Learning has come to an end. The Remote Learning Portal was designed to be a ‘go to’ for important information.   This site has now been renamed to the St James Catholic Primary School (School Portal).  The information which is on the site has not been removed.  In the event that we need to utilise this site for remote learning, the functionality is there.  Going forward, this site will be another way that information is shared with the school community.
