Scotsburn Bunjil Award Winners

With the renaming of our school values to Respectful, Responsible and Kind, our weekly awards have also gone through some rebranding. As part of this process, staff and students talked about what name we could use for our new student recognition awards.  After many great suggestions, we have decided to call our new awards - The Bunjil Awards. According to Dreamtime legend, 60,000 years ago, Bunjil soared over Wadawurrung Country, shaping the landscape and creating all the people and animals. A wedge-tail eagle creator-being, Bunjil made the laws for people to live by. We think that this is a great symbol and representation for students who are doing a wonderful job at the campus, both in and out of the classroom.

Some Scotsburn students are currently in the process of working with Mrs Morgan to create a new Bunjil Awards template, which will be ready for the next assembly.

Congratulations to last week’s Bunjil award winners, as well as our Specialist award winner:

It has also been wonderful to see students from all three classes share their learning during assemblies. It takes a lot of courage to come up in front of everyone and talk about their work - well done!

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Last Tuesday was a wonderful celebration for the campus with all the Prep students and staff on site for the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Everyone involved had an amazing time and I’m sure they will remember the day for years to come. Thanks to everyone involved for bringing the day to life.

Buninyong Primary School Cross Country Day

Next Tuesday (4th April),  is our whole school cross country day. We will be spending the whole day at the Buninyong campus, with us meeting from 8.45am at Buninyong in our usual spot in the courtyard. The cross-country events will conclude at lunchtime. When students are not running, they will be cheering on other students or working out of a classroom at the Buninyong Campus.

The schedule for the day is below – feel free to come along and cheer on your child! Please remember there are a couple of Scotsburn children running in different year level races due to their age. If you are unsure of this, please contact a Scotsburn staff member. We will make sure all students know the correct race to run in well before their event.

After lunch we will stay at the Buninyong campus to enjoy a fun afternoon together.

Please remember pick up arrangements will also be at the Buninyong Campus at 3.30pm, meeting in the courtyard.

SC1 Preps - 9.15am

SC1 and SC2 Grade 1s and 2s - 10.15am

SC2 Grade 3s and 4s - 10.45am

SC3 - 12.15pm

Last Day of Term 1 and Ride to School Day

Next Thursday (6th April), is the last day of Term 1. As there is an end of term whole school assembly planned, we will begin the day at the Buninyong Campus. After the assembly has concluded, we will return to the Scotsburn Campus to participate in some fun end of term activities. Normal Scotsburn pickup arrangements will occur at 2.30pm.

The last day of term is also doubling up as our Ride to School Day and as a Scotsburn Campus, we would love to be involved! We are asking students to bring their bikes to the Buninyong Campus before school to go for a fun ride around a designated track, with lots of other teachers and students. Those that bring their bikes will then have an opportunity to have a ride around the oval and basketball court at Buninyong after assembly. For families that have their bike at Buninyong for the day, they will then need to return to the Buninyong Campus in the afternoon to pick up the bike.

Keep an eye out for more information about this from Mr Rodgers in the wellbeing section of this newsletter.

Uniform Collection and Swap

We currently have a very large pile of spare uniform items in the old building. We would love for lots of these to find homes prior to the holidays. If you know your child is missing any items, please pop in and have a look, as some are currently unnamed.

Also, if you are looking for an extra jumper leading into winter, we have quite a few spares that we would love to donate to new homes. Feel free at any stage to come in and have a look at our unnamed and pile for any items that may be suitable.

Scotsburn School Review Parent Forum

You may be aware that Buninyong Primary School is currently going through our school review which happens every 4 years. As part of the review we are looking to seek feedback directly from our parent community to assist with our self evaluation and also to assist with planning for the future.

As a Scotsburn Campus, we have arranged a time to meet this Thursday (March 30th) at 2.30pm in the old building. We would love to see as many Scotsburn parents as possible attend, as your thoughts, insights and feedback from a Scotsburn perspective are so important to us. This parent perspective is imperative for us to gain valuable information on what makes Buninyong PS a great place to be and what can be improved for the future.

Thursday March 30 at 2.30pm - Scotsburn Campus Old Building

The forums will last around 30 min and the times have been chosen to coincide with the end of school pick up.

Alternatively, if you are unable to make the Scotsburn forum in person, there is a WebEx option below:

Holiday Care of Pip and the Chickens

We would love another family to offer to take care of Pip over the Easter holidays. She is very low maintenance, only requiring food and water every few days. If you are interested in taking care of Pip, please contact Mr Morgan this week. Please remember that her home is about 1.5 metres long, so a larger car is most likely required for transport.

In terms of our chickens, we would love a few volunteers to come in and top up their feed and water, and grab any eggs that have been laid. We currently have 15 chickens and in the past we have had a holiday roster, which is something that we will look to do again. Keep an eye out later this week and next week for a roster to be stuck on the notice board at the front of the campus to add your name to. Thanks in advance.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

SC1 had a fabulous day last Tuesday for the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. It was amazing to see how welcoming and excited the students were to share our amazing campus with the Buninyong Preps. They were so proud to show them the great facilities and the fun things that we get to do at recess and lunchtime. The day consisted of lots of fun activities that incorporated the ‘teddy theme’. SC1 finished up the afternoon decorating a biscuit and reflecting on the fun day we had! I am sure this day will be a highlight for many during their school journey!

In class, we have been working hard towards publishing our first story for the year. This week will see all our hard work from our writing cycle, planning, drafting, revising and editing come to an exciting end as we publish our books. I know the students are very excited to share their stories with their families.

Thank you for all of your support and please remember if there is anything you would like to discuss, we are always more than happy to make a time.

Have a great week,

Ana and Kirsty

SC2 Learning Snapshot

Some students in SC2 would love to share some highlights from their last week of learning:

Will L:I have loved working on my cereal box and the design. I loved drawing the tiger and making my slogan the cereal that will get you ready for school!”

Amity:  “I loved learning about summarising, using who, what, when, where and why, and then putting it into a paragraph. I did this with my independent reading book”

Flynn: “I loved doing PE this week because it was fun, and you can exercise with your friends. I loved doing hockey - it reminded me how much fun it is to play outside when the weather is good!”

SC3 Learning Snapshot

Well, what a busy few weeks we are currently going through! Particularly for our Grade 6 students, we have lots of events and excursions in a short period of time, and it is wonderful to see them take up so many amazing opportunities.

  • Last Friday, we had some students join Mrs Morgan for the first VSSS rehearsal at Yuille Park Community College. From all reports, at the Buninyong students did an incredible job.
  • Today, we have 8 students head off with a large number of Buninyong students to the GRIP Leadership conference in Melbourne. This experience will build on their ability to be great leaders, and provide them with skills that can be applied back at school and in the community.
  • On Thursday, we have Savannah, Summer, Ava, Hailey, Maggie and Amity from SC2, representing the school at the District Athletics. We know you give it your all!
  • On Friday, our Grade 6 SC3 students will be heading to Melbourne with the Buninyong Grade 6 cohort to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. This day will provide the students with an incredible opportunity to experience and explore STEM in a way they may never have before, as well as have the opportunity to watch the fastest cars in the world in action. We will need to leave the Buninyong Campus via Bus at 8am sharp for this event and will return by 3.30pm. Should there be any delays on the return, we will notify parents via Compass.

On Friday, our Grade 5s will join SC1 for the day at Scotsburn.

  • Next Tuesday (4th April) we have our whole school cross country day at Buninyong.
  • Next Wednesday (5th April) SC3 will also be at Buninyong to participate in the Solar Boat Challenge. The class has put lots of time and effort into their boats and presentations, and we can’t wait to see them race!
  • Finally, next Thursday (6th April) is our ride to school day at Buninyong, a whole school assembly, and the final day of the term.

So as you can see, there is a bit on! If you have any questions or concerns, please come and see me. I will do my best to send out lots of reminders and ensure that the students are ready to go!

Have a wonderful week everyone,

SC1 Colour Mixing

After listening to the story of “The Colours of Us” SC1 children had a big discussion about how we are all unique in our skin tones and there is no one colour called “skin colour”. We then set about experimenting with the different variations of skin colours that we could produce with brown, pink, yellow and white paints. When they were dry, students discussed and compared their skin coloured-paintings and selected the example closest to their own skin.

These paintings have formed the basis for our self portrait studies, which we will soon finish and take home. Students have created beautiful backgrounds for their self-portraits inspired by Joan Blond’s art, and we will soon add a speaking element using the chatter-pix app so that we can publish our Japanese self-introduction speaking into a movie. I am so excited to send them home next week and put the Japanese introductions on youtube for you to see! Keep an eye on Compass at the end of next week for the finished product.
