A STEM EVENT

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Challenge

On 28 February the menbers of the teaching STEM TEAM (Mr Eric Chan, Mr Mark Molino and Ms Kate Jones) ran the Spaghetti and Marshmallow challenge STEM event for Year 9 students.  Although the number of groups participating this time around was a little small, the students had a great time designing and constructing their tower.

This time around, the groups were challenged by the wind and rain – which meant we were taking up precious space in the dry seating of the Undercroft. Other challenges encountered were reading the instructions clearly and keeping track of the elapsed time (of their allocated 18 minutes).

“To start with I felt very confident that I could achieve the aims of the task.  As we were doing it, it became harder than I thought and I started to lose confidence.  Throughout the task I began to focus more on the challenge and wasn’t worried about the stress of losing but I just wanted to give it my best go. Sofia and I tried our best to use all of the materials we were given and put our minds to the thought of winning. Once we had built our tower, all we had to do was put the marshmallow on the top successfully without it falling down and that’s exactly what we did. We altered the overall structure at the end, so that it would be up and standing for as long as possible.  Can’t wait to do the next challenge!”
