Year 08 Humanities

Students in Year 08 Humanities have been studying Medieval Europe this term. Students are currently working on an essay that compares various areas of medieval life to modern day.

On Monday 6 March students took part in an excursion to Kryal Castle in Ballarat, where they explored medieval madness through hands-on action led by noble knights, ladies in waiting and humble peasants.

Students participated in the following modules:

  • APOTHECARY Learn about medieval illness and medicines – students will be disgusted and awed by remedies used in the dark ages. Students will explore our herb garden and learn about the healing properties within. They will put their new-found skills to use in the making of a “medieval band aid” with mortar and pestle.
  • EXECUTIONER & MANORIAL COURT- Tour our torture chamber and learn about the severe punishments that were handed down to maintain order in this period of unrest.
  • DRESSING THE KNIGHT In arms and armour students learned about the history of armour and weaponry and how it has evolved throughout the ages. Now they use their knowledge to dress a knight from head to toe in 40kg of solid armour
  • SWORD TRAINING Participate in sword training and learn the proper use of a sword and shield.
