Year 9 Chinese

Making sweet dumplings

Learning a foreign language is not only about being able to speak the language. It also provides a window into another nation’s history, culture, customs and principles, thus ensuring that any future cross-cultural communication is most effective.

February 19 was Lantern Festival Day, which is the last day of Chinese New Year.  The traditional food for eating during the Lantern Festival is sweet dumplings.

In Year 9 Chinese class, students are undertaking a series of tasks, in which they will eventually be required to demonstrate how to make sweet dumplings.

In these lessons, they have learnt to read Chinese language recipes, as well as practising making sweet dumplings on their own, so that they can gain the necessary experience to demonstrate to other people how to make them.

The majority of students enjoyed the real-life experience and they did a fantastic job, however some found the sweet dumplings not to their taste.

Now the students are on their way to becoming “qualified” Chinese chefs in a cooking demonstration.
